The Old Folks Home

I didnt think I was wasting a post..and didnt always have something to say about current things being discussed and figured it was nice way to maybe inject myself into a convo or least not just be a lurker but apart of it :) thanks for the nice compliment lol that does make me feel bit better about posting stuff sometimes think my questions or idea's are either too ignorant or a nuisance, I just try to ignore those lil whispering devils on my shoulder and ask anyways lol

I have verbal diarrhea but people still talk to me lol

:lau   totally!!!!!   :gig   :duc

Achem, I am also anti-VD, I am also not at all excited about Valentine's day either.

Why?  Can you tell a difference?

Did you get them free from a sawmill?

I just picked up some giant, totally full black plastic trash bags of wood chips.... but I payed $5 a bag for the convenience.  :idunno

I already had some I bought before you told me about sawmill freebees ( I use it in the poop trays and as cat litter) I'd say you can tell a difference in the humidity, it's not damp cold just cold cold, ya know... chickencanoe tried to get me to use them after I was talking about my birds having favus which came from some damp hay I used... Maybe if I had listened to him in the first place my big BO roo wouldn't of gotten frostbite on his comb.... Oh I also moved my big heated water bucket OUT of the coop... Moving the water probably made the biggest difference, I've never had humidity problems before and this is my first winter heating their water...

I haven't had cow in... boy... over 15 years so I can't tell you it's better than beef in your chili but it is delicious. We had our deer made up into a bunch of different styles but my favorites are the ground hamburger and the ground "italian style" sausage crumbles. Both are phenomenal in chili. I'm not a big fan of actual hunks of deer meat steaks but I'm going to try that crockpot thing someone mentioned a few weeks back (you shred the meat when you're done so there isn't a giant chunk).
ah man we use to have this awesome butcher when I lived in cali who made the bestest venison sausage and wild boar sausage .

Wisher... congrats to your son and deer is delicious. I just finished off the last of our deer chili this afternoon.

A little bit of incubator update, I'll keep it brief.

I split the shipped eggs fairly evenly between the Brinsea and the new LG. When uneven numbers and it fit, the extra went into the Brinsea. The Brinsea also got most of the (few) test eggs from my flock that I threw in to check for rooster effectiveness since I knew the Brinsea would be an accurate representation of actual fertility rate. I think I only put one in the LG.

The Brinsea had 25 eggs to start. Removed 6 today on candling for absolutely zero development. 76% development.
The LG had 15 eggs to start (well 16 but one ended up leaking the first day, sticking to the bottom rack and breaking when I tried to turn it, so I'm excluding that from the statistics). Removed 4 today on candling for absolutely zero development. 73% development.

I'd say at this point there's no significant statistical difference between the two incubators, considering the eggs weren't entirely equal. Most of the eggs that didn't develop were the leghorn eggs that I had shipped. Go figure. I let the seller know she likely sold me duds. Removing the leghorn eggs from the equation entirely since they were obviously duds, I had a 93% overall development from my eggs. Can't beat that.

I would not necessarily blame the seller. Most of the lower hatch rates from shipped eggs occurs in the failure to develop stage.

the little bits of connective tissue that suspend the embryo get broken in shipping. 73% at this stage is pretty good

I wouldn't rule out bad eggs at this point. I also would love to blame the USPS. For now the leghorns are a giant anomaly compared to the other batches. I let the seller know nicely, not blaming and not asking for a refund/replacement. Simply - I had most of them not develop which was an anomaly compared to the rest of what I got and if you haven't done a test batch there in a while this might prompt you to want to do one.

That's it.
