There is a pin through the nose usually.

Yes, through the top of the beak.

These ones are more like tabs that fit in the nostril.

You spread the peeper, fit the tab/pin at the nostril, release the spreader so the tabs close back together towards each other and the hard plastic maintains the shape of the peeper, which stays on the chicken. There's a space between the two tabs, so it's not like there's a bar going through the beak.

ahhh OK, I think I get it. Thanks for the explanation. That was what I visualized was a pin passing through the nostrils. Can't be that comfortable for the bird, but guess that's the punishment for picking.
