The Old Folks Home

I kept a bit of heat in the coop through the coldest spots, it was maybe -10 in the coop at the coldest, -20 outside. But the broodies and chicks did fine there. We've been pretty lucky with the temperatures this winter from a chicken perspective, it's been a lot warmer than usual. But as long as you can keep water liquid for them, I think they'll be fine. Make sure they're eating though, we just lost a broody mama who had neglected that part.

Vehve, thanks for the info. I should have moved her in the beginning to a small coop and figured out how to make it warmer. It's in a different, more open area and I think it's to cold there. It's to late now, The hatch is March 2? I don't think I should disturb her.

a quick wire partition to contain the chiks is easy to do... leave enough space for momma to get out and eat and dust bathe At first shes just going to want to get her strenght up to manage them Wild Chilluns. I kept my partition up till I could see the chicks easily hopping up on stuff and getting into trouble on their own

I had smallish birds at the time. A barnyard mix of Bantams and EEs. So I had to make chick ladders every where ....

which were stacks of bricks or rocks or a board to help them get over the sill of the aviary door.

Oh and because I use those big black feed tubs for water, I did a wire insert inside to raise up the level of the floor so if a chick fell in they would only be ankle deep. Lost one chick that way... Those tubs had to have steps too.

Deb, I searched my brain and came up with the solution. I have a section of my shed that is right by the big coop and it's a good sized room also. The bad part is it's got no door. it is fenced in though and has a gate. So, I have a nice big tarp and going to close it in for the most part and move her nest box in there. Luckily it is not nailed down so I can just move her nest box and all. . The nest box is a double decker and she chose the top nest of course. We have lots of bricks and i'll fix some steps. That was a great idea you had. The floor is a dirt floor and I will put lots of pine shavings on it and make it nice and comfy. It has some but i'll load it up. The other nice thing is that the nest box can sit on the floor and mama and chicks won't have to jump so far and that's good since she will probably be weak from not eating much. I have been putting handfuls of food in her box and she eats it sometimes. Gee, maybe I can be semi worry free. I say the word loosely. Haha thanks for the info.

Now many people have in their homes the equivalent of a Cray in computing power. Until they can unlock a method of raising up a clone without a surrogate mother I think we are safe.

WE have an infinitely better chance of bringing back a Mammoth because elephants have similarities. AND we have genetic samples that can be sequenced and compared with elephants to see if a clone is possible.

There is in my opinion too much time between us now and T Rex or any other animal that lived 65 million years ago. Our air is even different now... different foods different disease....

I have seen a Cray up close and personal and it just amazes me how far we have come so fast with computer technology. We were shopping for an external hard drive for our computer, just to store documents and pictures on and it was hard to find one that was less than a Terrabyte.
