The Old Folks Home

I'll try to get one tomorrow. I put her/him up in a separate enclosure to see if he/she would lay an egg. If it is indeed a hen and was crowing that well, no wonder the poor roo was confused!

[/U]I am SOgone. Over the edge for sure. One of the broody hens in the coop hatched a chick but it got out of whichever nest ... I don't know which hen hatched it - found it this afternoon cheeping on the coop floor. None of the three setting hens "wanted it" when I presented it to them, individually. Well, gonna have more chicks if any of the 23 eggs in lockdown hatch, so I put it in a wire cage brooder with an EcoGlow, feed, water bottle, and plush rooster binky for company. (Sparkle was too protective of HER four chicks to accept it.) NewChick, hereafter known as NC, ran in and out from under the EcoGlow, scratched in the feed, pecked at the drinker, but would NOT stop screaming. So NC is now fast asleep in a fold of my heated throw across my lap. Lizbeth the cat is stretched across my lap on the other side of NC's fold. Earlier, sniffed sniffed at NC and got her nose pecked. This is a first for me: brooding a day old chick MYSELF, as I rest in the Enchanted Recliner.

I have seen people set up a mirror for single chicks. It is supposed to help.

We have had two crowing egg layers over the years. One died of leg cancer. It was all very odd.

I have a lesbian hen. She doesn't crow, but she will not accept advances from any rooster (and I've had many over the years) and has grown the longest spurs I've ever seen. She lays eggs and is very friendly (one of my lap chickens). If all yours look the same (I'd love to see a picture, too), you probably have one of the unique hens to love!

That's sweet. I held Hoppy (my favorite speckled sussex) in my hands for almost a week straight. She had a broken leg when she first came here and had to be brooded separately. In her brooder, she had a plush chicken, some cat toys and a mirror, but she still screamed a lot of the time. It was just easier to hold and pet her. I'm glad I did it.

My flaky neighbor called yesterday that she may or may not be going out of town this weekend and may or may not be returning on Sunday or Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday (if she goes) so could I please watch her fish? Figured it was no big deal, and she brought it over. She didn't tell me it had to stay warm and that it HAD NO TOP.

I have two cats.

It took the cats about 5 minutes to notice the arrival of the fish. I (naively) thought in those first 5 minutes that because my cats have never seen a fish, they maybe didn't care about it.

I was wrong.

This was the scene last night:

... And 12 hours later, this morning:

BF must have put up the "barriers" last night when he got home.

This fish is going to be lucky to be alive on Sunday. Or Monday. Or Tuesday. Or Wednesday.

My BCM chick(Elizabeth) did that all night long the first night. She was oh so happy to get her new friends two Cochin Bantams, Lindsay and Roof, Although im pretty sure the black one is Roof is a ROO.

This is really weird. I had a lady call me yesterday that I sold a trio of hens to last month. She said one was a roo. These were all laying, fully feathered hens, about 8 months old. Ameraucana project culls. REALLY obvious gender.

So I go over there and there's one of the hens with a larger comb, no rooster feathering AT ALL, trying to mount another hen, crowing. I brought her home to my laying flock. There's no point in taking her out to the breeding farm, and I have a friend who wants a crowing hen to get at her neighbors, so she'll get this one. She had a small pea comb before. I wonder if the larger comb can result of a damaged ovary? This is my second Hermaphrodite Hen. It's a very odd thing!!

i Realized yesterday i really am getting old and/or out of touch with the world. although I'm sure its a combination of both. As i was standing in line at the grocery store i was looking at the covers of the tabloid magazines. i had absolutely no clue who that girl on the cover of people magazine was i didn't even recognize her name. This was followed by a comment to myself of what is wrong with kids these days, every other mag was so and so did some rude, immoral, illegal thing.
