I am...old...ish. I am married, at times...very happily. I have 3 sons. The oldest is married with a child. The middle is a Marine stationed in another state. The youngest is still here. He shares my love of chickens but, he's not too much into the dirty work that's involved: I had 8 hens and a rooster. They, one by one were picked off except one hen. She is a sweet rock. She's my avatar if you want to see her. She is currently broody. I would like to try to buy some chicks, which are at the local feed and seed, right now. I have several issues. My dad is 83 and probably going to move in with us before long and the new chicken run is not complete. I don't know how all that will work out. I think it would be therapeutic for me, as a caretaker but, then again, I wonder if I'm going to end up with too much on my plate. My dad has dementia.

My bf thinks my last hatch the humidity was really high and it messed up the circuit board.

I just moved all the eggs to the hovabator as the janoel suddenly dropped to 85f

i only could get the hovabator to 97f.

So i wrapped it up in a whole bunch of sheets and will check on it in 30 minutes. This hatching thing is very hard!

whats the room temp?

are you sure your thermometer is accurate?

There are a few new faces here so I think we all should take a moment and introduce ourselves a bit.

My name is deb and I dont mind you using my name in posts. I am 59.... Used to be lots of other things professionally. Right now I am care giver for my 98 year old grandma a Job I am so not qualified to do.... Thankfully shes got all her marbles and only needs a little physical help ....

I have a home up in the high desert east of San Diego. IT sits empty now.... There at one time I had a large flock of about twenty five Welsummers and about ten Guinea Fowel. Three Dwarf Goats... two Nigerian and one Pygmy. And one horse named Katee. Circumstance and cascade failure and a pack of coyotes took my poultry. about six months later a mountain lion got my goats.... So now I just have my horse up there.

Its been two years now.... Right now I am preparing to pack the truck for a day trip up.... Going to draw some plans up for a landing and some steps that are more handicap friendly. I get about with a Rolling walker these days and the original access to the Laundry room has an old set of plywood steps that are rickety and there is no place to stand to open the door knob... A design only for young agile people...

I hope to make it a modular design so I can build it up here in the back of the truck for transport and installation later.

Welcome.... I seem to have missed a big block of posts.... Sorry... But Welcome to the group and

too... My mom just turned 81.... and I live with my 98 year old grandma... shes going to be 99 in July... No dementia but just frustrated with all the parts that dont work so she gets somewhat crabby.... totally expected.

I gave up living in my home in the desert to come down here so Grandma wouldnt have to think about moving out of her home. Her home Her terms But then I dont have a family of my own and my son was already living with her. Win Win Win. Oh and Its just Grandma Mom Me and my son. No other menfolk or even aunts and uncles...

Any hoo welcome aboard. For what its worth there is in most places Elder Day care for those times when you need a break or have errands to do. With my son and I we tag team.... I am taking my first break in about a year... No emergencies up at the house perfect time to just go vegitate and do thinking things.... clean a little or alot depending on how I feel.

I have heard other people with hatching issues that finding a room that stays stable and the same temperature all the time is a strategy for keeping reliable temperatures in an incubator.

I gave up completely when I tried to hatch eggs about ten years ago. I had the incubator sitting on the dining room table.... It was the desert and the temps were pretty steady but here our issues are humidity... I find out NOW.

but I bought a 1588 about four years ago and threw some pullet eggs in it follwed the instructions but didnt tweak the controlls at all. I had a reptile thermometer/hygrometer combo for monitoring status in the incubator. Down here closer to the coast the humidity is higher... but I had to add water every other day even then. I had a successful hatch not all the eggs but I consider it successful because they all had about four strikes against them.

Aaraucana eggs... Notorious for firtility issues and lethal gene issues and pullet on top of all that. None of those hatched.
Guinea eggs.... Found on the floor of the coop in full sun day time temps were in the HIGH nineties.... Kicked about the coop by the guineas so half buried in the dirt.... And pullet eggs on top of that. I set five and three hatched right on time.

Keep at it you will figure it out.

Welcome Posoh and MarySue! Age really doesn't matter on this thread we just try to keep the younger "riff raff" out of the home. Of course we are known to get in trouble at times too so I guess it is not just the youngsters that get into hot water. We do try to behave most of the time. I promise!
