The Old Folks Home

I'm going to make one or 12 of these: http://www.gardeners.com/Instructions-Mason-Bee-House/8085,default,pg.html

Where did you get your hive SCG? I'm looking for info, even though I know it's late for this year...

Neat! With my luck though all the wasps and yellow jackets would like those homes. I battle them every year. I killed my first queen yesterday (it's getting warm, they're starting to emerge). Gotta find my traps today and get them up.

I got my hive from Kelley's (https://kelleybees.com/) - if you sign up for their newsletter you'll get the free shipping alerts when they have them, otherwise it's not a good deal. There's also a really cheap place near me called Humble Abodes, but again, you're going to get killed with shipping since you're not local. I purchased Kelley's because it was cypress wood, Humble only uses cheap pine and we are so damp here I was worried that the pine would decompose quickly. I will probably get another hive next year if I don't manage to kill this one and get it from Humble so I can support local (and compare the woods). I'm sure there's someone near you that makes them. A hive should run you between 80 and 150$ for a Langstroth. Top bar might be slightly cheaper but if you're new starting out most keepers recommend you start with the traditional Langstroth. BF has plans to build a top bar but I told him not this year. A Langstroth would be too hard to build all the components on your own.

It's getting late this year. I was lucky to have found someone that was still selling packages. You may still be able to get a nuc or even a swarm or if someone goes south, a package. My bees are coming from Georgia. A lady drives down, fills her van with packages, and then drives back up here and sells them. I pre-purchased one of those. Kelley's also still has Italian packages available, but I'm too far away to have it shipped here.

For those of you that celebrate, Happy Easter. For the rest of you, whatcha doing today? If you're close you can come on up and get frustrated with bee-box building.
In addition to watching newly hatched chicks - just took 3 more out of the incubator, leaving 3 wet ones inside to fluff up - I shall be re-building a wooden pantry shelf unit I put together two days ago. There wasn't enough glue included but I put it together anyway. Not good. The uprights slid a tad so one shelf already fell. Found some Carpenter's glue and will be de- and re-constructing it. My project came with instructions. Just not enough danged glue.

Why is it so hard to get high quality items with instructions AND all the necessary parts? It took us almost 8 weeks to put together our kitchen table because the holes didn't line up on the base. 5 billion phone calls later and a replacement part with correctly pre-drilled holes finally came in the mail.

Happy Easter, folks!

Grama had another brawl in the cafeteria of the old folks' home. Apparently she's fighting with some other biddy over this guy...there was an incident involving pushing and walkers.

You don't think I come by my charm accidentally, right? It's hereditary!!
I thought you were very charming!!!

I'm tempted but the 3 lbs of bees that I've already paid for will be here in 6 weeks. They will need their house together and painted and the fumes gone by that time. Because if I don't put it together the bees will be living in my house. Not acceptable.

Who made the bee hive?
