The Old Folks Home

Happy Easter to y'all!

I am a week behind... we had Palm Sunday today, and total idiot me

I forgot to bring a camera or cell phone or any other picture taking device. And the kids were so cute with the palms. Not only that, but our winter has been so mild this year, that we were able to walk all the way around the church with NO snow anywhere, and NO big mud pits or puddles! The grass isn't growing yet, but it actually looked lovely and spring like... AND I DIDN'T BRING A CAMERA!!!

Talking about frustration... I was so excited about it being Palm Sunday, and starting Holy Week etc. etc. etc. That when I moved eggs around this morning etc. I DIDN'T PUT THE LID BACK ON TOP OF THE INCUBATOR!!!!

My eggs had no lid, and no heat, for about 4 hours

Anyone want to guess about how many I might have killed?

None. I've had broodies off the nest in the dead of winter for hours. Had an incubator get unplugged in the middle of incubation for hours.

It just slows down the incubation a bit. Cold is much, much, much better than hot.

I didn't mention..... there are over 60 eggs in there, and almost 50 are my super expensive shipped Leghorn eggs, about 23 of those are "surprise who knows what breed of Leghorn" Leghorn eggs.

I can't wait to see them...... the breeder has all kinds of Leghorns... so I am hoping for some buff, or Exchequer or something else cool

(also about 12 quail, and my bantam blue wheaten Ameraucana eggs... and a few Marans......)

I'm jealous. My leghorn eggs were all duds. Getting 3 at the feedstore in late april... coinciding nicely with the gift eggs!

Thawed out enough today to be able to pry the small brooder off the frozen ground to haul it into the coop. I got the 6 girl "chicks" (more like half grown) in the coop. I had originally hauled another cage in there as well but they freaked out being separated so they're all crammed in the one small box for the next week to begin integration. The hoop house is still hopelessly surrounded by large snowbanks. Maybe it'll thaw in May.

We're getting 1-3 inches of snow tomorrow night. Wahhooo!

I just can't believe how you have taken all of my winter! WOW!

tossing a thin layer of ash on the snow helps it to melt lots fast... and in a 'normal' winter I usually start tossing out ash in April.... and yes, you might have to reapply a few times, but it is still totally worth it, makes a huge difference.
