The Old Folks Home

I thought I posted this already, but I can't find that it actually appeared, so I have to bring it up:

My HDL is 96. I can't even guess I'd be able to bring that down without eating lots of crap food...so my total is 202...and I'm in generally good health aside from migraines. Low BP...what would ACC say about this scenario? My doc chalks it up to: "good cancels bad, go home and be healthy."

I've just ignored it because I eat a lot of veggies.

So, I'm going to have to re-sprout the veggies the bunnies ate and put up chicken-wire inside my chain-link so they don't eat all the new sprouts. That's disappointing. I had such a good jump on the season!

Anyone else plant Malabar spinach up their fencing for the birds? This year, I've ordered a lot of extra to plant it heavily. Sunflowers, too- that's going to go in 1" hardware cloth cages to protect the roots.

I put in 6 more grape vines to help shade, as well. That's my favorite, so far- training the grapes to cover and protect the run while shading and providing treats!

your ratio is good then. if you have a family history of heart disease then you need to be aggressive - numbers are a guide - but genes are the best predictor.

i would love to grow good veggies on our plot but sand and salt make it next to impossible. thank goodness the veges grown in the hills are cheap

I took a couple of grape vines developed for florida as well as some LSU figs on the last trip. we do ok with fruit trees if we protect them from the winter onshore winds full of salt

I just tripped over the ottoman in our bedroom the other night, but it was dark. I got a really nice bruise out of it. Had to share don't ya know. I'm thinking clumsy comes with age. Has anyone noticed how they walk in the snow and ice in the winters now? Small baby steps with our heads down watching.
I just don't want to take a fall outside, my biggest fear. I stepped on a chickens foot last week because they are right under me as I head for the shed where the food is. You would think they would learn, but they keep on following tooo close. Little stinks. Some will squat right in front of me..you know how it goes. I just have to keep watch. There is no snow for a soft landing now.

gryeyes, I have chicks hatching too..only in an incubator. I'm trying the egg carton hatch this time/first time. I am hatching Australorps today. Then I have some Ameraucana/Silkie mixes going into lock down on Sunday. Along with a couple of Serama eggs that are doing ok so far. I think I'm liking this egg carton thing. They hatch, walk on the eggs, and the eggs stay put. Nice.

I hope you have a great hatch!

I hatched one time without cartons or something similar. I also have plastic ones that I cut down to fit into the incubator. They are designed for cabinet incubators.

I came home to my incubator off! A power surge killed an inline fuse thing. The spot check said L for the temperature. Two eggs had pips and luckily one of them peeped back at me! The two with the pips have hatched so I hope all will be well now.

Arielle, I am there with you. Spent many days tooling around "Beantown". Great memories of taking the "T" into south station with my friends and walking around Faneuil Hall. The news update just said they have "solid leads" on who did this. I have no question that they will be found and brought to justice. Boston and the country will recover, with scars for sure but recover we will.

Today they have made photos available from the survelence cameras. Very good phots to ID the 2 men. HOpe they catch them.

Two of the three eggs in Punkin's dog bed nest have hatched. The third is pipped and the shell is cracked all over, which I didn't expect. But she has been helping the chicks out of their shells.

This is fascinating to watch, but scarier than an incubator hatch! I don't know if she really knows what to do! She has picked up the chicks by their winglets! Then she tucks them back beneath her feathers.

ron, they are popping out like popcorn! It is so funny for me to see this, as I haven't hatched with them just sitting up in the shell peeking around with their legs still in the shell. lol...Tomorrow is the due date. I have more pipped, had to assist one, it had pipped all the way at the down really really close to the pointy end, glad I could see it because the egg was tilted. Doing well. Just about out. More babies by tomorrow for sure. Whoot.

Just skimming...can only pop in...but I wanted to tell you that you need to keep a coffee can of BOS seeds or scratch so that you can pitch it off in the other direction when you cross into their territory. That will allow you to get to their feed without them swarming around you. It is dangerous, for them and for us!! I aways have a reservoir of treats of some kind so they don't make movement impossible. I'm always terrified I'll kill someone!!

Hello..that's a great idea. Why in the world doesn't my brain think of these simple but wise directions before they come my way from someone? Ha, I will soo do this. Thanks Chooks!

I haven't even been asleep yet. I tried laying down, but no position is helping. Sitting hurts, cause it feels like my back can't hold me up, but it hurts less than in a rone position. Thanks for the hugs. Maybe they'll help.

Also can't sleep watching this stuff going on in Boston.. I heard about an app for my phone that's a police scanner than can hear what's going on, but I am so phone illiterate these days and this new fangled thing is driving me crazy.
