The Old Folks Home

Yes, hard week all around--we are about to get the referral to UCSF for parathyroid tumor removal. It has been more than a ten year journey. We had to see a surgeon at the local hospital yesterday to say that they did not do the minimally invasive surgery there so that we could get an out of network referral....The tumor was found using a nuclear scan and the family DR. was still against surgery. We had to do an end around.

We went to the clinic and picked up blood test results going back to 2006. She had a blood calcium level of 10.7 that year. If an adult is in the 10s for calcium, it is hurting you. She also has 25% bone loss in her spine and 22% bone loss in yer hip. This should have been diagnosed way before 2006. It is very easy to figure out but it is a woman's issue--The family Dr. told my wife that her symptoms could just be menopause...kidney stones, mental fog, depression, bone aches, osteopena? Give me a break!

She likely had this as early as the mid 90's. It is more deadly than high cholesterol--shortens life for about 6 years and kills in 20 years.

Sour Cherry Pie!
Recipe by Lisawas
"This is a sour cherry pie recipe that is SO simple I can put it together and get in the oven in less than 10 minutes. The hardest thing about this pie is tracking down canned sour cherries but if you look carefully, you can find them in most grocery stores. When the pie is served, top with vanilla ice cream to add the element of sweet to the sour!"
Ingredients

Original recipe makes 1 - 9 inch pie
  • 1 (15 ounce) package double crust ready-to-use pie crust
  • 3 (15 ounce) cans pitted sour cherries, drained
  • 3 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Press one of the pie crusts into a 9 inch pie plate. Stir together the cherries, tapioca, sugar, and almond extract in a bowl. Let the mixture stand for 3 to 5 minutes. Meanwhile, cut the other pie crust into 1/2 inch strips to make a lattice top. Pour the cherry mixture into the pie shell. Lay the strips across the pie in a lattice pattern, and pinch the edges to seal.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven 40 to 50 minutes until the crust is golden brown. Allow to cool before serving.
Enjoy, my friend.
