The Old Folks Home

SCG,

What in the world got your chicken though? That wouldn't have been the kids? Or maybe it was? (Super nasty kids, maybe)

I lost a black Ameraucana a week back.. Today another one tried to get away, but we saw her escape (the netting on the tractor was messed up, and let the chickens out.. I think the damage was due to a great horned owl). We chased her about, almost lost her, but then finally found her and brought her back home.

Where we found her, hiding under a spruce tree, was the corpse of the missing Am!!!! I couldn't see under there well enough.. So I sent a kid to crawl under and look... I was told it was intact... Head still there, most of the feathers gone, no clear sign of death... But after about a week of being dead the child was NOT gonna flip it over to see the other side unless I commanded. I said I totally got it, no command... We could just leave it. Point... I wonder how that one died.

I live on a dead end road, too, Ron, and you can't see my pumpkin from the road.

Kids or delivery guy.

Not sure what got the bird. She was pushed up against the fence and it had eaten her butt off, and then ripped into the insides from the vent. Not pretty.

I didn't do the birds the last 2 days due to class and working late, BF did, so I don't know when it happened. She didn't have rigor so either Thursday or just a bit before I found her. I'm guessing today because she was otherwise unharmed, you'd think the other chickens would have scavenged.

Stolen pumkins..any bears around?

We have had those lighted deer in our front yard. Not stolen, but remember, we live in a neighborhood, with a few kids that go by often. One morning, we wake up to our big daddy deer..well let's just say...he was with the mama deer! Kids.

Sorry to hear about a lost bird. No fun to lose one for sure. I haven't lost one lately knock on wood, but I just had to take care of two different chickens with bumble foot. It's been a while, so can't complain. They heal up pretty quick. They are already walking better, even with the bandages on.

Here's a thread killer.

Thanks. The whole house is covered in them with beds. Every couple years I have to pay someone to rebuild them due to all the heaving from winter. There's also old rock walls that denote the old property boundaries all in the woods and in front of the house. There's so many rocks up here there's not much else you can do but try to use them.
