The Old Folks Home

I now have black slicked back hair, black eyebrows, big black mustache, a cigar and my daughter's about to do my eyelashes with mascara after I gut a couple chickens.

Thanks for the laugh. Now where are the pictures?

Nothing fun for Halloween here. Just sitting at camp, having a few adult beverages after deer hunting. Didn't see a darn thing except squirrels

Hubby had fried squirrel that he killed earlier in the week ready when I came in. How about that? And tomorrow is his birthday.

Nothing fun here, either. BF spent 12 hours in the woods looking for a deer. He found all kinds of squirrels and chipmunks and ran into a herd of beaver. There weren't even wild turkeys out.

We had zero trick or treaters (just the way we like it) as usual. I don't even bother to buy candy. And my pumpkin is still accounted for.

No I haven't had candy for Halloween for years - no one ever comes to the house at the end of a dark street (mine). My father and I used to eat up all the candy, waiting for kids that never came. He passed away several years ago, so I just stopped buying it.
More money and room for ice cream.

... Decided I really wanted a vehicle that could go off road to the places I want to get pictures but can't because we just didn't have the right kind of car. Went and test drove the Jeep Renegade and the Nissan Frontier. Both are very well rated for off roading. Decided on the Frontier mainly because it has more ground clearance. I am thrilled with my new truck.

...
Wisher that party tray looks good enough to eat! (pun intended)
We actually had about 15 kids show up to our house for candy this year. That is a bumper crop of trick or treaters for us.
Very nice.
We're in the burbs but on 2 lane blacktop with a long distance to houses on my side of the street and no sidewalk, kids don't bother the long walk to get to a single house. In 18 years we've had about 6 TrT visitors.

Thanks for the laugh. Now where are the pictures?
...

OK, here goes.

One of the gifts little caskets my wife made for the wedding couple

Pugsley Addams. Like me, he also had a full beard yesterday morning.

Wednesday Addams

Last minute touchups. A stippling brush to lighten the tan and just enough mascara to darken the grey eyelashes.

The kids 20 years ago.

Dog doesn't know what the excitement is about

At the reception

Here's the groom. Don't have pictures of the bride but her dress was slightly more traditional, aside from all the tattoos. That's not her in the picture.

The lady with the horns next to my wife is going to be one of my gardening and chicken apprentices next year.

Awesome pics CC. Looks like a blast of a time! Were the bride and groom always big into Halloween, or was this just the time they decided to marry and went with the theme?

I have an issue I hope some of you more experienced chicken keepers can help.
I found my first dead chicken in the coop this morning. 6 month old golden comet. No signs of trauma, no predator sign, no bugs, nothing visibly wrong. I did pull something out of her vent, so I'm thinking eggbound? But don't really know what to look for. I have 8 (now 7) of these chicks, and egg production is down to about 5 a day, but I attributed that to the shorter daylight. We did notice one girl sitting in a tote of water yesterday, usually they just drink out of it. Its only about an inch deep of water. Not positive it was this chick, but likely. What can I look for?

I think it was the latter, they just decided to get married this time of year and then the idea of a Halloween wedding was spawned.

Could have been the same pullet. I like to use numbered leg bands with all the same breed so I can tell them apart when something like this happens. Without doing a necropsy, all you can do is keep an eye on them.

What did you pull out of her butt?

I have not had good luck with the production lines, most of them, anyway. All 4 of my original white leghorns and all 3 of my original red stars died of internal laying. It was awful. Their "butts" got real swollen and then they died. Interestingly all 3 of my black stars from the same hatchery are just fine. I have 2 white leghorns from a different hatchery now that are just starting to lay very small white eggs, so I'm hoping I got a healthier blood line this time.

I had one bird die from being impacted, and I was able to pull a weird leathery egg shell out of her butt after I found her.

I hate to tell you this, but sometimes birds just die. Many of my deaths are mysteries.

The only thing I have ever pulled out was - from a very young cocker pup. He was trying to expel something dark brown and thick, I almost collapsed thinking it was the biggest worm I had ever seen. Turned out to be the mattress handle from my bed. In the olden days, you turned your mattress so needed handles. His crate was next to my bed, and instead of sleeping I guess he kept pulling the handle and chewing till it was HIS.

Thanks. CC, I have bands on 3 of the chicks, but not the other 5. Two had severely crooked toes when I got them at 7 weeks, and this was one of them, and the one in the water yesterday was one also. I'm going to band the others and my lavender orpingtons now, for this very reason. Thanks for the reminder.

SCG, leathery is a good description, I assume egg. I did stink a finger in her vent and dont feel any other eggs. Maybe I'll try again. I know chickens die, I just don't want to miss something that may affect the others. I'll keep a watch on them for signs of anything I might catch quicker next time. The others are running around and seem happy. These birds also free range all day, so she could have gotten into something that the others didn't.

SPD -- Spoentaneous Poultry Death

If not acting ill-ish beforehand, perhaps a broken neck from flying into the wall or ceilling?

Love the Addams Family! Looks like a hoot of a party.

Now, if it were ice cream cups being handed out I bet Diva would enjoy Halloween a bit more.
