The Old Folks Home

CC, that's a beautiful dog your neighbor has, but I'd be furious if my neighbors dogs hurt any of chicks!

So they paid for your chickens, what are they going to do about their dog??!?
I'D be paying for their dog!!

Bama, I don't have a lot in the line of "real life" family or friends. But this place is my community - family and friends - and I'm happy to support you guys when I can (within reason). I met one of the bestest friends I've ever had on here, and I swear I couldn't have made it through this year without her or without you guys. I still struggle on a daily basis just to get up, put pants on and pretend to be normal. I could not do that without the support, friendship and laughter I've had from her and you guys. So while I know my cold hearty mutts aren't much, they're what I can offer. They're the least I can do when I get so much from you guys.
Back at you!

CC Arizona has what they call a "stupid driver law". During the monsoons the washes often become flooded and roads should be considered "impassable" by drivers. They run commercials every year warning drivers that 12" of water can wash a car away and as little as 18" can wash away a truck. Every year some idiot thinks they can make it through the wash. If they have to be rescued, they have to pay for the resources it took to rescue them. I like to think the price tag on that discourages some of the stupidity.

yep crooks indeed. yet they site the distance for the job. sixty miles one way takes an hour so I expect to have to pay their hourly rate to get here. Even a thousand dollars would put me in trouble though.

Even if they are charging $60/hour it would be $120 for travel. Another $480 if it takes them 8 hours to do the job = $600. But seeing as you are a WELL more than capable person in so many respects, you can do it free

Probably help to bring your son in though since the frame for a slider is pretty big.

The first attack was back in winter of 2009/10. But they've been back several times, killing chickens on one of those occasions. The first time she paid up within a couple hours and told me she wouldn't have blamed me if I killed the dogs. They killed 9 chickens on that occasion. I've kept a loaded 12 gauge on the back porch ever since.
She called animal control herself and asked them to take them. AC told her that her dogs would likely be rehomed but they weren't. When the deadline came for rehoming and they were to be put down the next day, she went back to rescue them.
One morning I went out and one of the dogs went from building to building, lunging at the coop windows trying to break in. Scared the bejeesus out of the chickens.
I really didn't want to kill the dog so I shot over it's head as it ran home. This was after it had taken a couple more chickens for which she was slow paying.
I read her the riot act. She said, "what do you want me to do?" I said I want her to keep her dogs on her property and that my chickens aren't coming on her property.
She said, "what about the coyotes?" I said, "the coyotes aren't killing my chickens, your dogs are."
I told her that was the last day her dogs would be coming home.
She was shocked when I told her that her dog had come back because she had them tied up. I told her it broke its chain. You can see the big chain hanging from it's collar.
That's twice the dog has broken a chain.

I'D be paying for their dog!!
No pay, SSS

I'm thinking Last Rites!

But also thinking of what I would really do if it happened to me...

oi vey
It would be a 7 MM but there is an old folks home through the woods behind my house so it has to be a 12 gauge.

On a much lighter note:

For some odd reason, the video won't play on this computer, though it played on an older machine just fine. I hope it plays for you.

I got the video but no sound.
CC: stay safe. It looks bad up in your neck of the woods

A lot of rivers converge on this area. We're on the NE edge of the Ozark Mountains and it is really hilly so these heavy rains continue to send water to a central point.
Where the interstate is closed there are actually 2 rivers so high that their waters are merging. The last largest flood of '93 had us all mesmerized as we watched levee after levee be overtopped and watched houses and barns floating by.

A few years ago they replaced the bridge over the creek at the bottom of the hill from my house with a much higher one. I have no problem getting to Lowe's, Home Depot, my local feed store and the grocery store so I'm good.

When I was a kid, I wondered why all the old houses were on hill tops, thinking that places them in exposure to winter winds. After so many floods, I wonder why anyone builds a home at the bottom of a hill.

Frustrating that it won't play - it's really cute. As the article says, it starts with a supposed call about a possible Breaking and Entering. Some excerpts:

Dispatcher (on radio). . . ."caller says he was awakened by a loud clatter. He says he sprang from his bed to see what was the matter. Be advised the subject was a large white male. white beard. red hat, red coat, red pants. The subject was also carrying a large bag."

Carter (4 year old) "That's Santa!" . . . . . "They got Santa!"

Dispatcher . . . . "subject is now in a red-colored sleigh pulled by eight reindeer."

Unit " . . . . "I believe I'm closer to that."

Carter "I'm so excited."

(Siren heard)

Unit . . . . ." visual on the vehicle . . . . southbound on the highway at a high rate of speed" . . . .

Carter "Are they going to arrest him?"

Unit . . . ."I'm stationary on road 321 . . . ."

Unit . . . ."there are no headlights. There is only a bright red light coming from the front of the vehicle."

Carter "That's the reindeer. That's Rudolf!"

Unit . . . . "I've lost sight of the vehicle."

Carter (to mother, who is recording) "Are you excited?"

Mother, "I am excited. Are you excited?"

Carter "Yes!" *squeals*

(unclear from radio, siren still heard)

Carter " . . . . .He drives a sled."

Mother "Sleigh"

Carter "Sleigh."

Unit . . . . "I believe we are coming at you" . . . .

Unit . . . . ."advised, subject yelling Ho, ho, ho" . . . .

Carter "Ho, ho, ho!"

Unit . . . ."subject still not stopping" . . . .

Dispatcher . . . ."do you have a tag?"

Carter . . . ."He don't have a tag?"

Unit "It appears to read . . . 'santa 1'"

Carter "Santa 1?"

Unit . . . . "It looks to be a North Pole registration" . . . . .

Dispatcher "That tag comes back 2012. . . .handcrafted sleigh. It's registered to a Christopher Kringle, One Toy Street, North Pole. It's valid through 2016. . . . . Negative stolen."

Unit . . . . speed 100 mph" . . . .

Unit "we have the subject stopped" . . . .

Mother "They stopped him."

Carter "Why did they stop him? They'll arrest him and they'll take him to jail."

Unit (apparently reading from subject's license)

Carter "I guess Santa is Christopher Kringle?"

Dispatcher . . . "there is no B and E . . .Be advised he was delivering presents."

Carter "He was delivering presents."

Mother "Yes, he wasn't breaking in, he was delivering presents."

Dispatcher "All units, be clear back" . . . . ."Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night."
