The Old Folks Home

Hope y'all over east of the Appalachians are faring OK. Over here on the front range it's ~52, in the sun feels like 70. You could def get a sun burn today. Just went outside in slippers and a T-shirt to check the chooks. Since it's so nice out, I decided to wade through the snow back to the bee hive. Warm enough in the sun today that they should have been moving around. Nope

Opened her up and the bees are all gone except for a few dead ones. Lots of capped honey. <sigh> Oh well, perhaps it's for the better as now I can take both hives with me when I move and not have to worry about bees, or selling them. Blocked the entrance to keep out mice and will deal with it after winter is over.

Latestarter, a bit of a bumm about the bees. :(

I am super picky.. Those Dominiques, the males are too dark, but their shape is pretty good, their head gear is good but not great. Most of the girls are too fluffy, Barred Rock shape, Dominique girls need to be more streamlined.

The SOP Dominique.

You are correct! Those are from Schilling.

The only issue with those photos, is that they make the male and female look like they are the same color. You actually want the color difference between male and female to be STRONG!!! The male should actually be pretty light.

My male has a great deal of faults, but he does have close to the color I want, a bit too dark still.

Less rural areas don't close. A lot of twisty mountainous back roads here. Our kids have about a hr bus ride, kids picked up first even longer. Our place is only 12 miles from the school.

We had -25 to -40 F windchill the other morning at bus time for the kids (some are out waiting as early as 7 a.m. because of the distance.) That caused a 2 hour start delay for the school in the northern half of the county. Snow almost never closes them unless it really ices up the roads. Ice storms will always close them, mostly because the teachers can't get in.
