The Old Folks Home

@Alaskan

I know you are probably on your way to church but I heard about the 7.5 rattle and wondered if it was near you?
x3 I hope you all are ok Alaskan!

No way!  That much snow?  Man, when I lived in VA back in the 60's, it was usually only around 6 inches..at the most.  And then there was no school.

Shoot, our schools close or delay at the mere mention of snow now days. Too much bellyaching about risking kids lives on buses...
Not that I'm insensitive or anything, but its gotten a bit overboard here.

You are correct! Those are from Schilling.

The only issue with those photos, is that they make the male and female look like they are the same color. You actually want the color difference between male and female to be STRONG!!! The male should actually be pretty light.

My male has a great deal of faults, but he does have close to the color I want, a bit too dark still.

I think its gorgeous!

The recipe actually called for you to cook it over flames and coals (depending on which part of the recipe) in a hearth.

As I only had a regular oven I was willing to cook in I had to do what I had to do to get that smoky taste.

It still smells awful in here. I had to shower and change clothes.

I bet it involved flammable chemicals

Maybe you could talk the BF into getting a wood stove. At least if you cook in that the smoke will have somewhere to go besides filling the house. I can't imagine trying to get the right amount of coals/air mix for the needed amount of (relatively) even heat though. I'm guessing it would take a fair bit of "tending".

Hope y'all over east of the Appalachians are faring OK. Over here on the front range it's ~52, in the sun feels like 70. You could def get a sun burn today. Just went outside in slippers and a T-shirt to check the chooks. Since it's so nice out, I decided to wade through the snow back to the bee hive. Warm enough in the sun today that they should have been moving around. Nope

Opened her up and the bees are all gone except for a few dead ones. Lots of capped honey. <sigh> Oh well, perhaps it's for the better as now I can take both hives with me when I move and not have to worry about bees, or selling them. Blocked the entrance to keep out mice and will deal with it after winter is over.

Bummer on the bees Joe. But I see your glass is half full

Did you REALLY trudge through snow in your house slippers?

Yeah Bruce... I have problems with swelling feet and legs so unless I'm actually going somewhere, I have a nice pair of soled Moccasin slip on slippers that I wear. They are designed for "minor" outdoor use (rubber soled). I didn't figure the snow would be as deep as it was... so they got a little wet inside. No biggie... they dry out

I have a path beaten/packed down in the snow to the coops, so that's no big deal except watching for ice patches which get slippery.

I can see that. I bought a pair of these for quick trips to the barn or store

Though in the winter I pull on the "winter" boots that turned out to only be good to about freezing ... unless you aren't moving much. Unfortunately I had gotten them in a size that fit with regular socks. Perhaps if I had gotten 1 size larger I could wear them with thick winter socks and they would be more useful in colder temperatures. But they are easier for the 5-10 minutes in the barn than the "pull the top drawstring, pull over the arch velcro strap that I did by in the next larger size and NEED to also put on thick socks or they are too loose to be comfortable. Always a tradeoff I guess.

I have industrial lug-sole no-back clogs I wear out for quick trips to check on the chooks. That way I just slip out of slippers and into clogs and don't have to sit down to put shoes on. They're heavy and, yes, I have worn them out in the snow.

Latestarter my hubby has mentioned wanting to keep bees. I believe his father had some, years ago. I may let him look for some. Sorry to hear you lost all yours.

SCG, I used to have some saved, will see if I can find any.
