The Old Folks Home

PS: goats.

And in full disclosure, my goats are full sized. Probably bigger than full sized. My fencing is very adequate for probably 150 lbs of goat. Pippy loves to rub and scratch on it, contributing to the bowing, but it continues to hold. I did not want to do electric because you have to keep it clear in the winter. That's basically impossible.

Then again I don't have teenagers to do my bidding.

Alaskan, with all you do, do you have time to milk a goat? Have you ever dealt with goats before? Can you build a space that will both confine and protect a creature that seems hell-bent on annihilating both itself and anything it can reach? I mean, you've had horses, so you know what they are like; pound for pound, goats are worse. And that really should be "goats." plural, since they are herd animals and hate being alone.

Better check your aluminum foil hat - something seems to be getting beamed through it.

goat fence = cattle panels

I dont trust electric because it doesnt work all the time here.... too dry. Though I would use it as a tool to keep em backed off.

Goats rub and climb and taste and work anything that sticks out. They Butt stuff just because....

So my new goat enclosure will have

Cattle panel fence with hot wire reinforcement
Trees surrounded by chainlink to keep them from being girdled
Shed build with a climbing strucutre combo... (old swingset fort)
Swing set instead of swings chunks of four by four hung from chain. (for butt heads)
feed stations in the fort and in thier house.
Goat climbing wall.

Mine are mixed-breed self-propelled brush disposal units rather than milk goats, but I have had lots of experience with them and electric fencing. If they feel strongly enough about it, they will run right through electric fencing. I had one that had gotten on the wrong side of a fence, and when she tried to run back through it, the charge knocked her feet out from under her and she fell on top of the wire. As long as she was lying down, the wire was grounded and she was fine, but every time she tried to get up, the wire came up with her, she got shocked, screamed, and fell down again. I don't remember how many times that got repeated before I got to the charger and turned it off so she could get off of it.

What works for me is 4-foot welded wire to contain them, and a shoulder-high (on them) hot wire to keep them from climbing/rubbing on the welded wire.

Yeah... I was thinking welded wire/goat fence, with an electric strand at the top....

I could cough up the money for that at my horse paddock... But my mind boggles at how much it would cost to buy that much fence for my two acre pasture. :th

I have a lovely two acre pasture with four strand electric.... Wonder if I could talk them into being " good" and stay inside it just for tge summer months. :lau

Hi everyone. I was absent a couple days because a Microsoft update seriously messed up my computer, and I had to start over from scratch. I keep a 500 GB backup hard drive stored in the bottom slot of my computer, and only connect it to do a backup, or to restore everything on the rare occasion that I need to. I plugged in my back up drive, and it was EMPTY. Not only was it empty, but it GREW. It was a 1TB drive. I was searching through my drives when Dh came over, and asked what I was doing. When I explained, he told me I would not find it. Last week, a friend of mine, and her husband came over, for Dh to help him with a computer problem he was having. The men worked on the computer, and we women visited. The men were engrossed in what they were doing, so she and I went to get pizza for all of us to eat. While we were gone, it was decided he needed another hard drive. Dh decided that instead of giving away one of the extra 1TB hard drives, he remembered seeing the smaller 500 GB drive in my computer, so he would give me the bigger 1TB hard drive, and give away the smaller one. After all, it was just sitting there, not plugged in, so no big deal, and he would tell me what he had done, just in case the little hard drive was important. Guess who FORGOT to tell me about the entire hard drive swap? Ok, I grabbed one of our copies of Windows 7, and off I go. I worked about 2 hours, when Dh decided he'd better check to make sure I got the right copy, because HIS product ID is now registered for life when he installed Windows 10. OF COURSE I had his copy, so I grabbed my copy, and back to the drawing board. Yes, I got it installed, and then got hit with Windows Updates. I had 322 updates to download, and install. It took forever. Ok, I finally got finished with the updates for Windows, then I installed Microsoft Office. Over 100 more updates. Good grief! I've still got a few more programs to put back in, but putting all the other programs in has not taken nearly as long as those darned updates. WHEW! Once I get done, I WILL back it all up. I may secure it with barbed wire, and a big padlock too.
