Quote: No need to drive to a lab... just call the lab and ask for their FedEx account number and overnight the deceased. This thread shows how to make send one:

Not sure why some states have more labs than others, or why some states don't have labs. Some states (Maryland?) do inexpensive out of state necropsies. Some states have grants in place for people that can't afford them. I think it was Purdue or maybe Cornell that will do them for free if you can't afford one.

If they don't share their FedEx number, ship via UPS or FedEx at the standard rate. I did one via UPS and it cost around $60. That was before I knew about asking for their account number.

I'm bookmarking that because I have a BA hen (was my best layer) that has been laying shell-less eggs starting this spring. She is still healthy looking and her usual active foraging self making her happy whistles, squeals, bugles, etc. But if she gets to the point I have to cull her for her comfort, I would like to know what was going on with a girl that laid like gangbusters for 3 years all of a sudden lost the ability to put a shell around those USDA Large eggs. I suppose I could look inside myself but I really wouldn't know what I was looking for.

How are things in the "Garlic Capital of the World"?
