so sorry about Penguin

I had one breeding pair once.. That produced unthrifty chicks.

They grew pretty well, unless you knew chickens really well they looked fine.... Then they would just die. Anywhere from one week to 8 weeks of age. It was weird. And nope, no longer a breeding pair.

Yep. Sometimes there is a genetic issue I imagine can happen in any species. I've never bred chickens (yet) but I ran into similar thing years ago when I bred German Shepherds.

Could also be cocci.

It is so hard when you lose them after you think they're "out of the woods"

How do I keep my other chicks from getting cocci I had them vaccinated or could it be something she ate in the run?
There is a vaccine for cocci but it is not commonly given. Usually the vaccine given for chicks is marks.

The best thing to do is to follow @casportpony s instructions for treating and building resistance.

cocci kill them within two days of showing symptoms--they do not have to have bloody poo.

I only have 11 left I have lost 4 almost a third of them. She was always really energetic i just don't know what happened
They usually show pain symptoms a day or so before dying. They also will not eat much--or drink which requires you to make sure they drink the water treated with corid.

Click on the link to Kathy's profile and look for the link she has for treatment. It is the best out there!

PS. I would start treating ASAP
