How many eggs in lockdown? Hope you have a successful hatch!

-Kathy
I have 9 that made it to lockdown. 3 are UofArkansas blue egg layers and the rest are Marans. There was a pip on one of the Marans eggs this morning so I expect to have some chicks hatched when I get home.

I feel for you on the birds that eat more than seeds!
What do you do to protect your plants and things you don't want them in?

This year the kids voted for no veggie garden, only chickens and berry plants

However, in the past I have used that white cloth-like grow cover. Is it Remay? It is supposed to be used for frost protection. The peas need to be totally covered in that stuff, until the rest of the world greens up very nicely. It turns out the birds will eat the pea plants down to the ground. Once the peas start to flower, I can take it off.

The other plants that the birds decimate are poppies. They will eat the flower buds right off!!!!! So, I stopped growing those.

For some crazy reason the birds aren't too bad with the raspberries, gooseberries, and serviceberries. I do have trouble with the strawberries... And I haven't found a good solution there. The rodent horde are also major strawberry eaters. :(

Quote: I have my strawberries in a kiddie pool filled with potting soil and then I put a fake owl next to it and a rubber snake and also covered it with the bird netting. I was some jam and to be able to use the strawberries this year. My plants are huge and they are sending out runners everywhere. I can't hardly keep them all in the bed. lol
I also ordered some of those silver looking pinwheels for the garden and my fruit trees. I am going to try everything I can think of! hahhaha I am even hanging pie tins in my fruit trees now.
