I love our Ayam Cemanis, but they are definitely not known for their egg laying abilities, lol... and personally, with the game type personality I wouldn't put them in a bigger mixed flock... maybe a hen or 2, but their flock dynamics seem very different... neat but different...

The eggs wouldn't be an issue, we're just keeping chickens as pets and for pest control. There's a total slug infestation here.
Do you think if they were hatched by a broody hen they might fit in better? What is it that makes them so different?

Might, but I dunno... it's hard to explain, lol... I was just trying to explain it to my Other Half and I gave up... he has to sit with them on his next day off...

For slugs, you want ducks... much better for slug population control...

Hmm.. oh well, there's plenty of other breeds to choose from.

We're pretty set on getting chickens, but may get ducks in the future as there's a natural pond/small lake thing at the back of our house that the geese like to swim in.

Yes, even a bantam... maybe even especially a bantam... they're more tenacious and have a bigger 'attitude'...

There is a saying about bantam roosters regarding their bossy and never give up behavior. I experienced this with my favorite, beautiful, every color of the rainbow bantam when i put 3 larger roosters in the coop. They nearly killed him because he kept attacking them so i let him range, permanently. Couldnt bear to see him killed. The other 3 are in the freezer because they attacked me and my grandson. Im letting the auracana live to see what he will do because he is so pretty but i wont hesitate to end it if i see one act of aggression. Fact is i have to cull some anyway due to crowding (my perception, not the formula's)

It amazes me sometimes how threads can go bad quickly. Recently on a thread there was someone wanting to go on a Hersheys chocolate tour...within several posts that turned into an offensive political rant...over chocolate....Ok, it was actually about Hershey cutting their workforce by 13%....

Or D-Con. Just found out that dcon no longer makes the pellet trays. They are selling a $7 box of 4 trays for $50 on ebay and that is the cheapest price. Nuff said. I have very, very, very strong views about pests and predators but i keep it to myself since many disagree. The idea of a forum like this is to share POSITIVE thoughts

As to roosters....

My Dominiques tend to be the best personalities. You can hatch a bad one, but rare.

My standard black Ameraucana (true Am, not an EE) is pretty good too, but I have only had two full grown ones of that breed. I have had some bantam wheaten Ameraucana that maybe wanted to go bad, not clear, not sure, but I selected a good one.

Ron on some threads I think some people just need someone to gripe at. I have dropped many of the threads over it.


Wow Deb you have a lot more energy than I do.

It wore me out making sauce and salsa and diced tomatoes this year. But I can't wait for the pears to be ready.
I just got some grapes and blue berries! Yummy!

I have had a bunch of hatchery and breeder roosters and the only ones that have not tried to get me are my Welsummer roosters.
I can even pick them up if I need to check or tend them and they will not hurt me. They are great with my hens also. I guess the only other rooster that I had this kick back was an AM rooster he was very laid back and an EE rooster I had raised about 8 or 9 broods of chicks for me.
