Well, shoot. I have to get up and attempt to make myself look decent, and go to the much dreaded DMV to probably wait in line for heaven only knows how long to get a new license with my married name on it. I dread this, but I have to get it over with. Maybe I'll get a chance to check back later. Have a great day

I knew I was old the day I stood in line at a Kroger's store about 15 years ago and heard the sweet young thing ahead of me in line talking to the equally sweet young thing that was the cashier. They were talking about a song they had heard on the radio and one was trying to think of the name of it and when it was recorded. After listening to them struggle with it for a few minutes, not only did I give them the name of the song, but the year it was recorded (somewhere in the early 70s) the group that recorded it and the groups lead singer. They turned and looked at me in amazement.

Yes, I told them as I unloaded my cart, I really am that old.

I first felt old when I was 25 and came across a co-worker and his young children at the grocery store. He introduced me as Mr. xxx. Only OLD people are called Mr.!

The next time was when I was at the grocery store about 20 years ago and you know those "oldies" they play as "background music"? It was by Jethro Tull. JT was Oldies?

I probably wouldn't even recognize the "oldies" that are equivalently old today, I've pretty much only listened to NPR for a few decades.

My "Gee, I'm OLD" moment came in the supermarket. They had some nice soothing muzak on...which was an orchestral Alice Cooper song that was quite an outlandish rebel track back in my high school days. Of course, I knew the lyrics and quietly mouthed all the words.

My 2005 Honda Civic Value edition has hand crank--Manual windows. I do not know if that was the last model for them but I suspect that the lower cost cars will still have them.

Last year DH finally got an upgrade to his 1995 budget Honda Civic. It was a great stick-shift beater car with 250K miles on it that got great mileage, but -- alas -- no cruise control, auto windows, CD player, and a very anemic air-con. He's now in a computerized Honda -- auto and sync'ed everything, back up and turn cameras, moon roof, heated seats, air bags, yada, yada -- and now, with all the goodies, he's a very happy camper. You'd have thought he won the lottery! The car is named "Miss Garnet" due to its color, but -- in reality -- I'm happy to have him so jazzed. (Who knew??)

We have a 1986 VW Jetta. 450,000 miles on it. Stick shift, no AC, the heater works sorta, old school 65 horse diesel motor, crank windows. It does have a working radio and gets 50+ miles per gallon on the road. I don't drive it much. It's strictly DH's baby as the transmission is a bit tricky and he understands it better than I do. Me, I'm in their searching for the right gear like I'm reaching into a grab bag. I can drive a tractor, ride a dirt bike, ride a motorcycle, but that car whips me every time.

My car is a 86 Mercedes. Also a diesel but it has power windows that work ....... most of the time. No AC but good heat that sometimes comes on even in the summer, which makes you glad the auto windows work.

It's a great car though for highway driving. Crank it up to 70 and it's purring like a happy kitten.

Both cars are turbo charged and I love the sound of the turbo coming on line.

The good thing about both of the cars is that there are no pesky electronics on them. If there is an EM pulse event or the you know what hits the fan, those two cars are going to be weaving around the fancy new cars that are DOA on the interstate with no chance of getting started again.

Sometimes old school is better.

SCG I wouldn't really panic about the standard transmission when trying to buy a new car. Most cars still offer the option for standard. You might have to order the car because most people want automatic transmissions but if you are in a market where standards are desired, the dealers probably will have a few on the lot. I would figure out what type of car you want then call around and see if anyone has a standard on the lot to try the test drive on.

When I was younger, that's all I wanted to drive..was stick. Then I hit my mid 40's, finally got a car with an automatic trans. I had to keep my left leg back against the seat to make sure I didn't go for the clutch!

Took the bandage off yesterday. She is walking around like nothing ever happened. No limping.

We have been kind of looking for a 3rd vehicle to tow behind our RV when we go on trips. We need a manual transmission small vehicle.
We are not having any luck finding one around here.
Right now the only way we could tow our truck is if dh climbs under it and then we would have to tow it backwards. So that is not going to happen.

When I graduated from college had a 1 ton manual GMC the old crank windows
I drove Ford 3/4 ton or better crank windows manual transmission
my 98 Beaver Contessa was push button manual diesel
I had two different vw bugs both manual
