At least you kept it to get it tested. We didn't and then decided later to have the whole family get the shots as a precaution...not fun.

My Wife had to go through that--a Dog bit her in Mexico and then disappeared. She was not allowed out of the Country until she had 2 of the shots and then signed a contract to get the last to in the US.

They were not as bad as the 20 in the stomach but bad enough!

We just got the bill this week from our ins, you wouldn't believe what they were charged, have to ask DW for the exact figures but it was over $30 grand, ridiculous. We were billed for way more than we can afford, public health said they pick up what ins doesn't cover, dang I sure hope they do.

Really hope your bat comes back negative.

Ron, sorry that happened. I hope it all turns out that it was not rabid.

I didn't realize that being in the same room with a bat was so dangerous. I know that some of the germs will remain in the areas that a rabid bat was in, but thought the danger of contacting rabies was minimized, unless it bit you.

If the person is incapacitated or asleep, then they may not know if the bat bit them. If you do not have the bat for testing then you need to get the shots as a precaution. If the bat does not have rabies then you do not need the shots. Usually the bat is rabies free. This one seemed perfectly healthy but it was inside the house, which is a bit of an odd behavior.

Rabies is 99.9$ fatal if it is in the active stage with symptoms.

Thanks Ron. We had bats in our chimney for years. They never came in the house, but I kept the fireplace damper closed, a screen in front of it, and since I'm in Florida, never had occasion to use the fireplace.

My dad had bat houses on his lake property to help with mosquito control. Never had a problem with them either. Yes, I knew it was fatal if bitten by a rabid one, and shots required.

I just never gave much thought to one getting into the room when a person was sleeping. I guess it would be difficult to determine if one had been bitten while sleeping.

I hung up a bat house years ago ... Maybe 10... Did it exactly like directed and still no bats in it BUT, just two nights ago my eldest said that he thought he heard a bat in the hayloft while he was milking. Silly creatures.

Alaskan bats hibernate.... I rather hope he moves out to the bat house to sleep...

Alaskan I was just thinking of you. To briefly change the subject, I made the BC mint brownies. They had loads of green mint chips in them and some mint icing to drizzle over the top. The mint flavor was overpowering and I hate to say I tossed them out. The chocolate seemed to be dark chocolate, though it wasn't mentioned on the description. I don't like dark chocolate either.

But, maybe this all means you would love it.
