The Old Folks Home

They will be chicks. I hope to give them their own pen. I also have some Buff Orp, Welsummer babies coming. I bought 4 brown leghorns. One passed early on. Two are roosters and I have one sweet little hen they are nearly 6 months old, One on the Brown Leghorn roosters I am going to keep. Just because he protects the hens and stops their fussing and it is his flock! And that says alot for him! I don't like the way the other one acts he is mean to my hens and my turkey so is is going to be sold with the last 3 BA roosters! The only reason I bought the leghorns was for the white eggs... But now I only have one?
andalusians are nice white egg layers

Welcome back! I love the blue andalusian! I wish I had more pen space, oh well I can't have everything I want. She looks like a real sweetie. I loved the photos of your trip. It looks like West VA is just a slice of heaven. Thanks for sharing!

We had a terrible storm this afternoon, and my power was off for 6 hours. I put all of my eggs from my incubators in a cooler with 3, 2 liter bottles of hot water to keep them warm. I hope I didn't loose any. Two of my 'bators were in the process of hatching. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will hatch in the next 24 to 48 hours.

the power drop will be fine. happy hatching

Thanks so much for the good wishes!
I put the eggs back in the incubator when the power came back on. I heard pipping in the cooler! I had 9 chicks to hatch before the outage and I hope there will be more babies in the morning! Last winter I had a power outage and I put the eggs in a large roasting pan with a slightly damp towel to keep the humidity up and set them in the bread warmer on top of my old Atlanta wood cook stove. I had heard that many people hatched chicks behind the wood stoves years ago. The temps stayed at 99 to 100 degrees and I had a great hatch. The power was out about 2 days. I had 3 incubators full today and all of them were set on different dates. About 1 week apart. Hopefully I won't loose too many. I had some project eggs in them as well as some of my LF breeds. I hate loosing any, but sometimes it happens.
Thank goodness we don't have too many outages!
Here are some of the babies that I hatched a few weeks ago.

Good hatching vibes coming your way! I hope they all hatch! I am working on week 2 of my first hatch! It is very exciting!

SCG--were the leghorns egg layers, or breeder bred? THe better bred birds might have less of a problem I think.

Love the poppy seed bar of soap-- I like the sysmetry of the seeds thruout.

Ok question-- why is the wax red on cheese? I've only seen red wax or clear wax over cheese cloth??

Love the park-- in the first pic is the wall comprised of stacked cut stone??

They were hatchery stock. I agree that better bred birds might be less of a problem.

I don't understand the question about why the wax is red... it's what they had for cheese wax. The cheese was pulled out of the press, the cheese cloth was taken off, it was allowed to dry and form a rind and then we waxed it.

Yes, the first picture has stacked cut stone, and it isn't in the park. It was just along the side of the road.

We only have 3 more days of this insane heat before getting back down into the 70s.

Ok I think I got caught up LOL! Love the vacation pictures! That is a beautiful place. I have Guinea eggs due to hatch on the 24th but we had our A/C go out and the incubator got up to 110 degrees so I will be surprised if any hatch. I am so in on next years Cinco De Mayo Turkey hatch! I have been reading that thread and it sounds fun and exciting. I am totally new at hatching eggs! I hope I can do it LOL.
