The Old Folks Home

I emailed a lady about getting some Black OEGB chicks from her next month. I was going to try to hatch my own but our Amish neighbor is going to have some of his eggs for me in a couple of weeks, I hope and they are going to go into the incubator. My hens are just barely starting to lay again so when I ask any of them if they want to go broody they just look at me and say "Got treats?" If I can get chicks from the breeder about the same time the Amish eggs hatch I'm hoping to brood the whole group together. We have friends who have Silver Duck Wing OEGBs and their little rooster died a couple of months back. She wants a few more but can't make contact with the man she bought hers from 8 years ago. These are super nice older folks (talking 80ish) and gave me enough metal siding to recover my new shed conversion coop and enough chain link fencing to build a cockerel and bantam run. They want OEGBs so my plan is to raise the ones I can hopefully get to fledglings and give them six of them. I've batted my brains out trying to find SDW's within driving distance and have struck out completely. I'm hoping they will like these. The eggs I'm getting from our Amish neighbor are OEGB/cochin and OGK (only God knows) what other type of bantam mix. I have 4 that survived my first time broody's poop fest that occurred during her Sept. hatching and they are just dolls. I'm going to get 10 eggs from him and hope I can do better. I don't plan to let my standards set any of their own eggs this year. I have 22 layers right now and that's plenty for the time being for us, but I want littles! My plan is to hatch only bantams this year. I might be able to get my hands on some Serama eggs later on.

Wondering how they will get along with OEGBs.
should be fine a friend out here has her silkies with her OEGB

An easy solution to your capsule dilemma is to get some white Karo syrup, and some toothpicks. For dose one, pour some of the syrup (1/2 to 1 teaspoon) into a clean tablespoon, then open the capsule, and pour about half into the syrup, then mix it good with the toothpick. Take the dose, then close the capsule, and repeat when it's time for the second dose. I realize the two doses won't be 100% precise, however, it will be close enough it won't really matter, and at the end of the day, you will have taken the prescribed dose. My mother did this with one of her medicines for years.

Tomorrow we are going to get the door closure hardware for all the coop doors, all the stuff to run the electric, and all the stuff to run the water out to the coop. While there is still some work to be done, I think we will be able to bring my flock home within about 2 weeks. YAY!!!

Dh took off work, and went with me to the oncologist. The news is not good, but could be a lot worse. I've got quite a few tests to have done over the next couple weeks, and will probably start chemo in about 3 weeks.

In the meantime, I seem to be getting better every day. I need to get more fresh pineapple when we go out tomorrow.

My husband deals with the same nonsense through the VA. The hoops the doctors have to jump through to get medications for patients that aren't listed on their prescribed list of drugs are ridiculous and he dealt with it as a professional trying to get insurances to pay for expensive drugs for his patients when they really needed the medication that he was prescribing for them...and I was usually the one on the phone with both the pharmacy and the insurance companies.

<Dragging @superchemicalgirl back because I don't want her to leave> Sorry for all your ice. No garden plants of any type even started here. Not sure there will be. Though I like garden fresh veggies every once and a while, it's not really enough for me to want all the work a garden entails. :\ Some survivalist I am huh?

Getaclue! I'm so sorry the pathology reports weren't good. All I can do is offer you a hug and a prayer that God touches you with His healing grace and restores that perfect health to you. The upcoming weeks will be tough but you are strong of spirit and can get through them. And you know we are all rooting for you.

Miss Heny! Good to have you back. Sorry life has been stressful for you. I slipped on black ice out by my chicken coop and fell into a post 2 weeks ago. Thought I had only bruised a rib or two but the past two days the swelling and bruising have been going down and I've been in more pain instead of less. Pressed around last night and looks like I broke rib #10 as it is 'loose' and moving around when I press on it. So I'm taking it super easy. Not much a doctor can do other than tell you to take pain medicine, not lift and take it easy. I hate being restricted but it's all I can do right now.

How have you been? Life is less stressful, I hope. That can be as bad as being sick or injured.

I don't see a reason for 40 daily versus 20 twice daily in a PPI... that's the same. Maybe they're thinking if they get you to once daily they can drop you to 20 once daily?

I got nothing, otherwise.

Thanks for the advice you give!

Sadly, it seems like Dr.s do not keep up with current research. For example, most digestion problems, like ulcers and gerd are caused by h. pylori and can be cured by antibiotics. A lot of older Dr.s still do not believe this and would rather prescribe acid reducers.

Older people should be tested for stomache acid levels and h. pylore before going on acid reducers. It is a lot more common for older people to have not enough acid and the acid reducer medicine will make the problem worse. I have gotten a lot of help by taking an HCL pill with enzymes before meals. See, raising acid when eating especially heavy foods helps!

Microchic, make shure DH does not have an H. pylori over load and get them to test stomach acid. If too low, the acid reducer pills should be evaluated and I would suggest from a younger DR.

Yep. My mother had H-pylori and wound up with a bleeding ulcer that almost killed her. My dad wound up having surgery for ulcers also. I talked to my doc about the H-pylori connection and he agreed and said I was basically taking the treatment for it now with the ppi inhibitor plus the rounds of antibiotics I had taken for Lyme disease. Still, the problem goes on. Happily I went back to my old dosage and this morning my stomach is liking me again. I suspect a lot of my stomach problems has to do with the long term medications I've had to be on for various medical problems down through the years. But hey! I've made it to 63.5 years of age so I'm not going to complain too much about the handful of pills I down every day as long as they work.

Superchemicalgirl is a treasure. I highly respect my pharmacist here in town. He keeps things straight for me and also goes to bat for me when the need arises. To have a high caliber pill pusher in a small town is a miracle.
