The Old Folks Home

We had a rat at the barn.... It got into some daily dewormer than one of the horses picked out of her feed and dumped on the ground... it drug it's hind end about 15 feet before it finally stopped moving... Dewormer isn't poison, it's a muscle relaxer on steroids, it makes the worms relax and lose their grip so they fall out of the intestines, so the rat just got weaker and weaker until finally he couldn't move and his heart or lungs gave out... probably not a pleasant death...
Would have been a very slow death your right, We do not have any of those things out as
we have the outside cats but seems you watched it and disposed of it which
makes it all good

Quote: We didn't have the barn cat yet at that time, so it was just the horses out there (which I would HOPE wouldn't eat a dead rat...), the horse was SUPPOSED to eat the wormer, but she decided she didn't like it, so she sorted it out of her feed and spit it in the sawdust (amazing how those huge lips can sort 1 pellet out of a bucket of other pellets the same size when they can't even see what they are doing). We got there the next day and found the dead rat in a stall, he had started in another stall, went out that stall door, around the wall, into another section of the barn, and into another stall. You could actually see his tracks and tell what had happened to him from them, it started out with just a tail drag mark, then the drag mark got deeper and wider until you could tell the back end wasn't working at all, then about 4 feet further is where he finally stopped...

I don't use daily dewormer anymore mostly due to not worming my horses very often (they are a closed herd and only one has any sort of weight issues so I seriously doubt that there are worm issues, the one with weight issues gets dewormed) plus, the worms will build up a resistance to the chemicals if you don't give it EVERY DAY and I don't want to have to stress about chemical resistant worms if I can't go to the barn and feed one day for some reason.

This is some of the view of my new coop, from my screened in patio:

We planted grass over the dirt we had hauled in, and yes, it is growing:

There are 5- 8x8 coops, 2- 4x8 coops, 3- 8x16 runs. I can rotate who gets to use the runs every other day. I can also subdivide the runs to correspond with the coops later on, if I so desire.

Each coop has it's own electrical outlet. I will get the splitters for the spigots, so each coop will have it's own hose. The fence posts are for the electric fence, which is forthcoming.

Each coop has it's own fan.

I know it seemed to take forever, but I really did get my chickens home. They seem happy enough.

Nice!!

I don't have a feed room mine is out in the weather I hate to say I'm trying to expand my coop to add a feed room but will be a while a new coop comes first
I kept my feed in my back room till my dh brought home an old shack from work after I told him I needed a feed room. lol I could not believe he came home with one. lol
It does not even have a door on it. lol The companies drivers use to use it to log in loads. But they had stopped using it.

Oh how I love Ebay sometimes I have had great luck with it lately I had to get a refund for one purchase, next I had to get a partial refund from a purchase then I did get my thermometer/hygrometers but I ordered batteries too!! They were ordered on the 15 of last month expected on the 23rd so I could use them in my incubator for easter hatch a long but nooooo. I had to go out and buy some checked 3 stores and it cost me 20 dollars ( button cell ) so onnthe 28th I sent a msg asking where are my battteries. No answer so Monday I contacted them again about my batteries saying I wouldnt be asking again. They apologized and said that my shipment was lost. Well I got it today and looked at the shipping date the 28th after I questioned them and then I checked them ( tested them) only 3 of 10 are any good!! I'm not made of money I have to turn over every penny 3 times before I spend it ( Social security) people like that just tick me off!!
