The Old Folks Home

Any opinions on electric fence for goats? Looking it up, some do, some don't. I'd like to fence a acre, don't think I could afford to going non-electric.

We went with non-electric. Around here we don't have enough sun in the winter to keep it charged, the snow/weeds will short it out and I think it's kinda a pain. We also don't really have dirt here, more like dirt icing on a rock cake, and getting anything into the ground more than an inch or so is difficult business.

I built fencing panels to my liking out of 2x4s and fencing that I bought on a roll. They hook together, stand up on top of the dirt icing, are really heavy duty and are movable (not that we've actually moved them more than once but we could).

We had a baby goat escape, once, between the panels, but that's it. The goats abuse the heck out of the panels, pushing on it, scratching on it, standing on the metal fencing, but it's held up. It does have quite the patina of goat hair on it, but it's held up.

Hi Alaskan, barely getting around this new site but, I won't give up. Miss talking to all the regulars.

I've been a member over on BYH for years, so some of this stuff looks very familiar, but there are doo-dads here that I keep learning about. For example - there are a couple of buttons over on the right next to the slider that are like the express elevator - the "up" one takes you to the top of the page, the "down" one takes you to the bottom. I don't know what it's called, but at the bottom of the page and near the top are bars that show the levels of nested forums - "Home, Forums, Social, Random Ramblings" in this case - and there's a little icon that looks sorta like a "three balls" pawnshop thingy (except they are squares, not balls). That's a "quick navigation" button; clicking on it brings up a menu that makes jumping from forum to forum or whatever a whole lot faster. Kinda like my phone, I'm starting to love this . . . .

Good morning everyone!:frow

Question: I've wondered this for years. Can you use ivomec (or an ivermectin derivative) "pour on" on goats? I always would wanted to be able to use it on sheep, but we can't because of the lanolin...it was drench or injectable. I use the drench. I've never been able to ask that question, I don't know anyone with goats.. I'm simply curious...lol. :D

Wisher, it sounds like a coyote to me....even though it could be a bobcat. It had the problem awile back in January. I set a live trap and to my surprise caught a forty two pound bobcat.

Cupman, I hope you can get your situation resolved. I went five years without chickens....those were a long five years.

Whoa, JD; did you step into a time warp or something?!

Glad to see that yet another of our "Old Folks" have made it!
