The Old Folks Home

I did research on this years ago and made it and people love it on everything! Including me. :drool
If we have our old pics on here now, not sure? I may have a pic of the remnants of one of the tallest shag bark hickory's I've ever saw. It was next to our trailer where we used to live. If it fell down the other way, would have killed my whole family and flattened our trailer. Broke off in a storm, I wasn't home, at work. In-laws about a hundred yards away ran outside in the storm cause when it landed shook their house, thought their chimney fell down lol. DW probably didn't find humour in it, was in the kitchen for the crash feet away.
It broke off about ten feet up, pretty sure I have a awesome pic on here of the trunk after it fell with wild hops I planted around it about completely covering it and a nice rock wall around the bottom with the nicest marigolds I've ever grew.
We ate tons of nuts from it before it fell, didn't know you could make syrup from the bark. There is some young trees not far from there, probably planted by squirrels lol. I'll have to check them out. There's probably other hickory around but I think they're probably rare here, don't think I've ran into any in all my hunting travels. Kinda like butternut, only run into one, old tree, maybe more around now. Chestnuts though, ran into a bunch of young trees a couple yrs ago. Clear cut area on state land, clear cut except for the big oaks, was excellent hunting, still is but so grown up now you can barely get into it. Heard the old American chestnut roots that died off during the blight many yrs ago can lay dormant for decades, and the dozing, skidding, disturbing the ground 'woke' them up.

I would love to have goats. I keep having nightmares though about having to deal with all the parasites. If they are anything like the chickens have been I'd be forever dosing them with something or another.

I did the 7th day candling on Dolly's eggs tonight. 4 developing. One with blood ring and one infertile. If she hatches 4 I'll be thrilled for her.

Rain! We got a brief shower this afternoon but really need a good soaker. Every time a car goes down our road it looks like an Arizona dust storm.

I hate to admit it but I' not keen on company staying longer than 3days and I like it if it is even shorter than 3 days. I enjoy seeing old friends but as I get older I find that it is just well.....harder....to deal with. My mom had a plate hanging on her kitchen wall that said "My house is clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy". That pretty well sums up home. Unfortunately most of our 'city' friends wouldn't understand the sick chicken in the pen on the back deck or the chicks squeaking and peeping all night in the brooder which occupies its space in the hobby room. Then there is that ever delightful gallop around the back yard when one of the bantam roosters stages an escape. Of course there is that ever stressful week before they arrive when you just have to have the house spotless which is hard to do thanks to the chicks in the hobby room and the sick rooster on the back deck. Around us right now the turtles are laying eggs which drives the dogs nuts. They find a female digging a nest and stand over her barking their lungs out which means we have to go out and rescue the poor thing and drag the dog into the house. Nope no understanding at all. DH is fond of the old saying about company and garbage both beginning to smell after 3 days.

Guess we are natural born hermits.
I plant my garden in row hills. Every yr I catch a couple big snapping turtles digging up my plants and laying eggs either in my pumpkins or my tators lol.

My MIL just left after being here for 3wks... I wanted to cry! :thShe's great & I love her, but I don't want anybody (who wasn't born here) staying for 3wks!!!
We have children that just moved in until their home is done that is being built. They have 7 children and one on the way. :D They lived way north of us, didn't see much of them. Unroll now! They bouhgt a big R.V. while waiting. They have it parked on our driveway. Some take turns sleeping in the 2 extra bedrooms we have, and out there. The expecting mom stays in every night. We are figuring things out. :wee:yao_O

(You forgot about the poop on the front step. Or is that just us?) laughing.gif

The last turtle I saw was about 20 years ago. They either aren't that common here...or they have mad ninja skills in avoiding us. laughing.gif

It is definitely not just you! I love my girls, but one of these days the poop on the porch might push me over the edge... Especially the duck poop. :sick

I NEED that plaque! Your house (& your moms) sounds a lot like mine, minus the rooster. I scrambled for a week to rush chicks out of the back room, into the grow out pen a week earlier than they should've gone in & scrubbing down walls... I swear, the more I cleaned, the messier it got. A couple days after my MIL got here, the city plowed the abandoned field across the street from my house. This set off an earwig infestation of EPIC, biblical proportions. I've never seen anything like it. I was outside every night trying to kill hoards of these things before they moved into my house. If MIL had seen what was going on outside, she would've needed therapy.

Wow! That is a heavy load! I agree, when their house is built, you will probably qualify for sainthood or knighthood or both!

So happy no one got hurt or the houses crushed. Sounds like it was a beautiful tree.

You really need to only take bits of the bark from different places on the tree so that you don't let it freeze during the winter or let to many pests in. You can only use the bark during the summer when the tree opens up the bark to get air in.
I tried in the fall and it did not taste the same.
We have 5 hickory trees in the pasture where the chickens are. Out in the back where the cows are we have 4-5 pecan trees but they are not as old as I would like them to be. The squirrels eat most all the pecans when we go looking for them.

Here are 3 of our Hickory trees in this pic. They are between the turkey pens and the wood brooder and tward's the left going back to the cow pasture.
