The Old Folks Home

We have bee splitting wood for over a week now. Last year we seemed to have a lot of oak but this year, it's Hickory for some reason. Gnarly, splintery, tough as nails, makes the splitter groan Hickory. I'm so tired of Hickory that the thought of eating it kinda turns my stomach. Then again that may also be my tree nut allergy making me queasy and since Hickory is a nut tree......

Still we have so much shag bark hickory that I'm glad there is a use for it besides kindling.

Does the finished syrup smell like the seasoned hickory chips or does it smell like the gree wood?

The $100.00 savings will go toward getting the dryer. Dh is insisting on it. Even tho my dryer is working fine, it's as old as the washer was, so he would rather replace it now, and have a nice looking matching set, than to wait for it to break down, then not be able to get the matching dryer. Me, I don't care if they match or not.

After he gets the dryer, I'm getting my Hoover Floormate.

Neither one. It's very different in taste and smell. Ask Scg if she can describe it.
If you search for my old listing on bst for hickory and pecan syrup you can read what people thought of it.
One person told me that if I did not patent my syrup she would.

I'll have look into that. Is it hard to make?

Not if you don't mind spending most of the day in the kitchen. It takes usually 2 days to make. I cut the time in half today. And dh got home in time to lick the last bit in the bottom of the pot after I filled the jars and canned them.

It's official! I've become a cranky old lady. My guests left this morning, and I was glad to see them go.
:hugs
My MIL just left after being here for 3wks... I wanted to cry! :thShe's great & I love her, but I don't want anybody (who wasn't born here) staying for 3wks!!!
:hugs
I get cranky before anyone would even arrive. It just goes downhill from there.
(And we have a guest house...don't even have to be in the same house...lol)
So...I'm glad we live out in the sticks where no one wants to visit. :lau

They delivered, and set up my new front load washer this morning. I love it! My old one broke, and the repairs were only a little less than a new one. It was 16 years old, so we decided it would be better to replace, than repair. I'm so glad we did. I did the research, and checked prices. Famous Tate had the model I wanted, and the best price.
GE® ENERGY STAR® 4.3 DOE Cu. Ft. Capacity Frontload Washer

I'm interested on how you like it. Our set is....about 13 years old.
One day something's not going to work. hmm.png

I think I bought hickory syrup from someone on here a few years back, they were selling hickory and something else syrup. It was very light and sweet and delicious.

It's always a good day at work when the groundskeeper calls you... apparently we have rogue chickens living out by the back gate. He thinks they're roosters and they've been there about 2 weeks and he was told to make them move along. And apparently my chicken keeping prowess is well known so he consulted me for both catching and disposal.

I explained to him that Sunday was rooster camp day and that I could do a few more if he'd catch them. He did ask that I help catch them since I was the expert but I explained that the government probably wouldn't like that filed under "other duties as assigned" while I got paid to be a pharmacist and that I had too much stuff to do to take leave to go help. I went out there after work but didn't see them, there was a small amount of poop under the tree so I'm guessing they roost there at night. He had set up a hilarious have-a-heart trap with lots of bread trails leading into it. I bet he'll get a skunk. I'm not taking a skunk home. I would also bet that his chicken sexing skills suck, and that they're likely hens. If they're hens I have a home set up already.
Hoping they're hens! :ya:fl The bread crumbs into the trap is hilarious! I would love to see his face if he catches a skunk! Oh boy.
I've never had hickory syrup or pecan...Sounds delicious! :)
It looks so delicious too! :drool I'm making supper and my stomach is growling seeing the tastiness.:th

My dh will not let me even talk about pigs around here! :lau
The old cement in the barn here would never survive their snouts...lol. My uncles raises and finishes his hogs...so if we want, we can get one from him. And he uses feed peas to finish his pigs....omg...so succulent and tasty. :drool The fat is so good.

I think I'm best sticking with chickens, guineas and sheep. Even if my brain won't compute that.:p I'm even considering selling my budgie. That's just one more thing to do where the time could be better spent on chicks or keets.:love

I'm still trying to get someone (a very good home) to take my goats.

Came home from work yesterday to discover my Nubian spent all day rubbing her hair off... it was too hot the last few days and she got itchy (she's baseline a very itchy goat anyway). She looks dreadful.
