If we have our old pics on here now, not sure? I may have a pic of the remnants of one of the tallest shag bark hickory's I've ever saw. It was next to our trailer where we used to live. If it fell down the other way, would have killed my whole family and flattened our trailer. Broke off in a storm, I wasn't home, at work. In-laws about a hundred yards away ran outside in the storm cause when it landed shook their house, thought their chimney fell down lol. DW probably didn't find humour in it, was in the kitchen for the crash feet away.I did research on this years ago and made it and people love it on everything! Including me.![]()
It broke off about ten feet up, pretty sure I have a awesome pic on here of the trunk after it fell with wild hops I planted around it about completely covering it and a nice rock wall around the bottom with the nicest marigolds I've ever grew.
We ate tons of nuts from it before it fell, didn't know you could make syrup from the bark. There is some young trees not far from there, probably planted by squirrels lol. I'll have to check them out. There's probably other hickory around but I think they're probably rare here, don't think I've ran into any in all my hunting travels. Kinda like butternut, only run into one, old tree, maybe more around now. Chestnuts though, ran into a bunch of young trees a couple yrs ago. Clear cut area on state land, clear cut except for the big oaks, was excellent hunting, still is but so grown up now you can barely get into it. Heard the old American chestnut roots that died off during the blight many yrs ago can lay dormant for decades, and the dozing, skidding, disturbing the ground 'woke' them up.
She's great & I love her, but I don't want anybody (who wasn't born here) staying for 3wks!!!
They lived way north of us, didn't see much of them. Unroll now! They bouhgt a big R.V. while waiting. They have it parked on our driveway. Some take turns sleeping in the 2 extra bedrooms we have, and out there. The expecting mom stays in every night. We are figuring things out.
