The Old Folks Home

Morning.
My plans for the weekend? We are supposed to set new heat records so other than trying to keep the critters hydrated, not too much. Had nasty storms rolled thru late pm yesterday ahead of a ridiculous warm front and we are supposed to be in the 90's today! Did I mention this is northern WI????? :th

To make things worse it's opening weekend of duck hunting. Our quiet northwoods sounded like WWIII broke out at dawn. We are directly in the path of a major flyway (which is why we have herons, cranes and snowy egrets along with many other birds all spending summers in our neighborhood. I am particularly fond of the snow geese, loons and herons that nest in the floodplain in our back forty every year). We have a lake a mile or so our west that has an enormous marsh at it's north end where the river flows into it and another large marsh the other side of the fields to our south where the creek that flows thru our property merges with the Wolf River. Needless to say our area is a magnet for anyone in the northwoods that happens to enjoy the taste of waterfowl and of course any of their more southern relatives that they have decided to brag to. :smack

So my weekend plans? Trying to hide from the ridiculous heat and dangerous city people with shotguns in little boats.

Temperatures here are still going to be hovering in the high 80 low 90s here this weekend so I will probably be in the house continuing fall cleaning and push coop cleaning back to the first of next week when the temps are finally going to drop to the high 60s low 70s.

We got the stove and stove pipe cleaned out so that is good to go. I always feel better when we have that done and ready for the first fire of the season.

I got my Halloween/fall decorations out. I simply love Halloween and fall decor. Getting it out means that when I put it away after Thanksgiving it will be time to get the Christmas decor out and that is something I love more than Fall decor.

So my weekend will be spent as a continuation of the Fall cleaning quest.

Add to my list, process applesauce. I woke up this morning and the big bucket of apples is still sitting by the stove mocking me. I was really hoping the apple fairies would pop by overnight and steal them but no such luck. I got four pints in the freezer with probably 8 more to go. I peel and dice apples until my fingers prunify. By that time I have a dutch oven full of apples so I quit peeling and cook them up, mash, add minimal sugar and lots of cinnamon/nutmeg, cook it down and presto, applesauce..

I made apple pie last night. Frankly, I'm peeling apples in my sleep at the moment. DH is out picking the last off of the trees. They will go to the neighbors with 13 kids. One of the oldest daughters bakes a lattice work apple pie that will raise the dead for a slice.

It's quite a humbling experience, LOL

James son made fried potatoes with bacon I did a few eggs myself so we had a great breakfast between us new cockerel is still alive out with his new pretty ladies not sure he is old enough to mount although he had one of my home grown girls squatting last night

I wish i had the energy you all have. lol

I have been up nearly all night. I did get a pot roast on and made biscuits and gravy for breakfast. I still have a blackberry pie to put in the oven. Our son is coming for supper.
So I will spend the day cooking. lol But it's nice to see family.

Micro, i love Halloween too! I used to have a ton of decorations but DH threw most of it out when we left TN because the mice got into it. No one will trick or treat at our house , it is too remote.
