The Old Folks Home

I do lots of ditzy things: poured milk into a glass of coke , have run the washer a few different times with no clothes in it. Had a Timex Ironman speed + distance watch thingie that ended up in the washer & then dryer when I had pulled a t-shirt off and didn't realize it was stuck with the sleeve. By golly after all that torment, it was still ticking.

Filled ice cube tray and shoved it into freezer on sharp downward angle- so I got a load of cold water down my blouse. How dumb.

Frequently I go to take my pills, fill a glass of water. Drink water and hours later find the pills still sitting patiently near the empty glass.

Put garbage can out for pick up, later saw it was empty so returned to driveway. Went to throw something in the kitchen waste container and saw it was filled with kitchen garbage - I had never taken it out.

Run microwave with nothing in it. More often put tv dinner in microwave and wander off.
Next day go to use microwave and find cold tv dinner inside. :barnie

DW somehow put salt in my coffee one morning, took a few sips to realize, this just ain't right...lol

reminds me years back, when my dad was visiting. .

my parents would stay in the house next door, and come over in the morning to visit.

So my dad came over this morning, and I saw his coffee cup from the day before, half full. I knew he was happy with day old coffee... so I nuked it, added a bit more coffee and cream and served it to him.

he drank it for a bit before he said that there was something just not right with that coffee. He asked me to check the milk..make sure it hadn't gone sour...I checked the carton...it was fine. :hu

Then it finally dawned on him... I had taken his port from last night...and added coffee and cream.

He said it was impressively horrid...but he wasn't about to waste good port...so finished it up. :lau

No wonder I like you so much! Sounds just like me.

The worst is when I decide to "put something away in a safe place". That is always code for "guaranteed to never find again".

Beer Elderberries are toxic until cooked. According to the research I did on them. But all the old timers used them for a tonic in the spring and fall to keep them from getting sick.
They have a lot of antioxidants and healthy benefits in them. You can make pies, syrup, jam and much more with the berries and flowers. The canes can are also used for musical instruments and blow dart's. Lol I guess they areas strong as bamboo. I am growing them to help boost my immune system. There is a farm in NC That grows acres of them trying to save all the species they are working with the Ag. Dept. They also sell their products in stores and online. It's called Norms Farms.
I bought some cuttings from him as well as a couple live plants online.
Here is a link to his FB page:

My niece put salt in my coffee once!
I was wanting to drink a cup with my mom. The first sip I started spitting and choking while foaming. I finally got up to get her and she hid behind my mom! My mom asked what did she do while I was trying to get ahold of her! When I told my mom she begged me not to kill her!!!

Diva I have done most of those same things. Lol
And I am also guilty of putting stuff away a d never see it again!
Once it was $250. I put in a camera. To hide it. The camera disappeared!

Had venison pot roast tonight. Everything harvested from here. Potatoes, carrots, onions and venison, dang I didn't give it a thought but should have topped it with cabbage had a bunch of heads in the fridge...
Was awesome anyway. I don't know what they do to store bought carrots? Unbelievable how much more flavor homegrown has.
The store bought ones probably sit around a long time in storage.

I do the "put it in a safe place", then spend days trying to find the safe place. I've done the "find it in the microwave the next day" thing too. Usually it's coffee, that needed a bit of heating up, at the end of the night, then I get distracted, or fall asleep. I am guilty of forgetting to take my medicine too. To be fair, until recently, I've never had to take any medicine on a daily basis.

Penny, you sound completely normal to me. :hugs

Okay, here goes. From memory, Pennsylvania Deutsch Rivel Soup:

Prepare chicken stock. I usually use a couple of leg and thigh quarters, simmered in seasoned water along with a medium onion chopped up in it. Once done, cool and bone the chicken and return it to the broth. You may need to add water to the broth to bring the level back up.

While the chicken broth is cooking, prepare the noodle mix using one large egg, salt and pepper to taste and enough flour to make a coarse crumble type mixture similar to the topping that you prepare for dutch apple pie or cobbler.

Grate 1/4 to a half of a cup of carrot.

Bring the broth up to a rolling boil and slowly add the noodle mixture to the broth, stirring constantly as you do.

Add the grated carrot.

Reduce heat to simmer and stir frequently. Cook until 'rivels' are tender.

You may have to thin the soup as it thickens considerably as you cook it.

I tend to 'taste test' it as it simmers and add more salt, pepper as needed. Also you can add more or less onion depending on your taste.

When done, the soup should have a medium thick texture. It keeps well, tending to thicken when it cools. Simply add a touch more water when reheating and it's good to go.

I think I've remembered everything. The only recipes I was able to get my mom to dictate to me from memory besides this one before her mind went completely were this recipe, her pie crust recipe and the recipe for sour cream chocolate cake which was passed down to her from her MIL and is also a PD recipe. Mom was an excellent cook and I was raised on a blend of Old South/Pennsylvania Deutsch cuisine including Cup Cheese, Muenster cheese, sour kraut, shoe fly pie mixed with southern fried chicken, ham and beans with homemade cornbread. Neck bones, ham hocks.

Gawd! Looking back it's a wonder I'm not a star on My 600 Pound LIfe!:lau

And on a sadder note, it appears there is another hurricane inbound, this time for the central gulf coast. Just what we need on top of Harvey and Irma... Hope any in its path are prepared and suffer little to no real damage.

I'll second that. :fl
