The Old Folks Home

Watch for places marking their seeds down. I am waiting on TSC to do better than 25% off they currently have.
Great advice!
I should check the grocery outlet too

I've tried to get DW talked into one, she says too much $$. But look at the cost of a dog, food, and depending on breed die in 6-10,12 yrs. If we get a young Grey now it'll probably outlive us, and parrots can talk!
If you get a pure-bred dog, you will probably spend at least $800.00, maybe more. I got Dylan from Craig's List for $800. she is older, fine with me!

I am a parrot person too. :hu I think that proves I am crazy or something.

I used to have bigger parrots...but am now down sized to a cockatiel and a budgie.

I used to have a Pionus (died from inhaling a seed hull), and a bare eyed cockatoo (died from smoke inhalation from a house fire). The Pionus and bare-eye cockatoo had great personalities. Very smart, not great talkers but not bad screamers either. Also they were fine with being alone without developing bad behaviors.

Three plants, only, out of the whole package of seeds, and only three fruit one from each plant.

wow! that is bad.

Rule of thumb smaller the dog more money but longer life if you are diligent for the teeth just like us bad teeth and gums in the mouth will kill early... Big dog little less money but pay for quality hips, eyes, bite, front, side gate and down and back drop ears need more care than erect, does not usually live as long but genetics play a big roll.. short coat shed 365 days a year.. long coat learn to groom it or pay for it at lease every other month ... double coat shed twice a year daylight determines if your not qualified to strip it take to have done do not shave double coat dogs that is protection in all weather... They are not to be given away re-homed whatever lets you bail they are living breathing creatures this is and always should be throughout it's life not on your whim they are not disposable because you made it stupid in raising it... here I will step off my soapbox again  okay had to add if you kids are a mess probably you dog will be :duc did I say that :plbb

All of that goes double for parrots, except bigger parrots live longer. Parrots shed feathers ALL THE TIME! And, chew all their lives, not just when young like a pup! An African Grey chick can be $1500.00 in California, they are a little less in AZ. Dylan is more of a rescue, from nutty owners who would sell her on CL. I like parrots, but they are not for everybody! A bird can learn bad things from bad owners, even more so than a dog, because birds live longer and collect bad habits all their lives. I do spend some time NOT reinforcing some bad things, loud calls, mostly. But all in all I am not sorry I got her off CL. They are not all the same -- I interviewed her before I bought her, she was friendly and healthy, so a good deal to me!

@penny1960 that was very well put about adopting a pet.

I'd like to add also that one of the new bi-products of purebred breeding is that degenerative myelopathy is becoming more well known in many large breed and yes, even small breed dogs. The disease is genetic in nature and there is reliable testing for the gene. Having the gene isn't a guarantee that your dog will develop the condition but it does raise the chances of it occuring and would be prevalent in any puppies produced if your dog breeds with another dog that has the gene.

Our 9 year old Australian Cattle Dog has developed it. We thought about getting another ACD but now we won't as they are finding more instances of the S0D1 (I think that is the gene responsible, but please don't quote me) gene in tested animals. It's heartbreaking to watch him slowly decline like a person with severe MS, which this disease is very much like.

Am I promoting mix breed dogs over purebreds? No. There are a lot of good pure bred dogs out there. Just be aware of the genetic problems any breed of animal you are looking at so you are aware of what you may be facing down the line.
