The Old Folks Home

Cap, sorry about your husband. Hope he gets over the worst of the pain soon. Ribs can take time to heal.

Ron, I have defective chickens. Mine don't grow waffles. What a gyp. I should be getting eggs and waffles from them, and right now, I'm not even getting eggs. Hmph!

DD, and I put plastic up around the coop today. I went to get tarps, but they didn't have the ones I wanted, and they didn't have enough of the size I decided I could use instead. I didn't want to run all over to get enough, SO I started looking at the plastic used by painters for drop cloth. Found one that was reasonably thick, so that's what I got. I'm still kicking myself. It's way too flimsy, and wanted to tear where it was stapled. We doubled it over where we stapled, to get it to stay. I will be getting the tarps.

While getting the plastic put on, we discovered a rat tunnel. Got it dug up, and refilled with dirt. I'll get some bait, and deal with that too. I was told by a neighbor, that before this house was built, there was a trailer on here. When they went to tear down the trailer, a lot of rats came running out of it. We have plenty of hawks around here. Do they just eat chicken? There shouldn't be many rats, or snakes if they were doing their job. The slackers!
When I put plastic on our old windows for winter I cut strips from thin cardboard (soda/beer box type cardboard) and staple that over the plastic. Lately I pick up the window kits when I find them on sale cheap, clearer plastic and the two way tape they come with sticks pretty good.
Got the idea from how we always built plastic buildings for working in the winter in the bluestone quarry. Used lath and roofing nails to hold the plastic, re-use the lath for many yrs. Cost about $12 for a bundle of 50, 4' long.

Another alternative, if openings aren't too large, is a clear vinyl shower curtain. They are thicker and hold up well, but still need a "tack strip" of some kind to keep the screws from tearing through the vinyl. I like that they are clear and let all the light in and keep the wet and wind out.

Now I want Waffles!
I am having banana bread and cereal instead

Do you have rats or just a tunnel? The kind that make burrows are not good. They eat your chciken feed! Some say they eat eggs and maybe little chics. Do they chew on feathers at night?

Oh rats... rats.
Mine ate ducklings. And eggs. And feed.
And caused massive amounts of damage to the floors.

I joined a winter CSA and the first batch had a couple of really foreign (to me) things in it. I have never eaten a beet as an adult and there were also sunchokes. BF cooked them up last night and I have to tell you neither were amazing, but neither were awful (with enough salt and pepper). However, about 30 minutes after dinner I started to get bloating and stomach pains and the sheer volume of flatulence that occurred after that dinner was amazing. Not sure if it was the beets, the chokes or both... but wow. I had to sleep on the couch.

Sun chokes are known for bloating. Beets turn your "waste" red.

IT WAS THE SUNCHOKES?

I'm not sure why I didn't suspect them... they were all cute and potato like. I never expected it from them.
When you posted about them a while ago, I quoted an article about them that said they caused bloating and flatulence. They are Jeruselem artichokes. Changing the name to make them look fancy at a farmers market does not change what they do when you eat them!

I could call beets ruby gems but they would still make the toilet water red....

Well, crap, I don't recall reading that article...
And, let's be honest here, I don't know that it would have changed my behavior. I wanted to try them, badly. Part of my reason for signing up for the CSA was to try new, foreign foods. My colon disagrees with that plan.

Those of you that need a good laugh, the comment section here is great.
