Had to take care of two bumble footsies today. Funny thing is..I know, it isn't a funny situation, but you have to know, these two birds..RIR's, have been joined at the hip since they were little. They can't go anywhere in the yard without each other. The one gal was starting to hold her foot up, I couldn't let it go, so did it today first time I saw her holding her foot up for a bit. Eeew, needed to be done..puss came out as soon as I poked around the plug. Poor girl. The other RIR had one started..so, got that one too. Not as big a plug as the first one. Now, for the bandage changes every other day. Anyone on here have some advice for taking care of this once it's been done? I have heard, every other day, change bandage. How long will this take. I did a leghorn a couple of years ago, she healed pretty quick. Man, I probably won't get any eggs from these two gals for a while now. They lay every day for me.

Sorry about the bumble foot!

I have a bunch molting so eggs are thinning out now.
 
I don't have any vet wrap! I want some..found out a local feed store here in town has it. Have seen many photos now with the vet wrap, and, it sounds like it would be a lot easier than what I used..people bandages and health tape.



Always together. :) There's my RIW..wish she would start laying. She's pretty close.
 
You can usually buy it at drug stores (CVS, Walgreens, etc) or beg it from vets or blood donation locations. It is cheaper online, and good to have for critters with all numbers of legs, including two........ you can also use duct tape.

Although it looks like you did a great, job, just get the self-sticking bandages at your local drug store. Much easier to use and more importantly comes off easier.

I took the bandages off, and soaked the foot in a mixture of epsom salt and a bit of antibacterial soap (I used chlorhexidine). Then squirted some hydrogen peroxide in the wound the first few days, then squeezed some triple antibiotic ointment onto the foot and rubbed it in and then a large plug of it onto a 1x1 inch square gauze pad, which got stuck to the bumble, then covered in vet wrap. It takes about 10 days to heal, then you can leave the bandage on for 3-4 days, then repeat until the entire thing closes.

The tape - you put 3 cuts in one side and 1 cut in the other side. The 1 cut goes around the back toe. The other cuts go between the front toes, they all meet up at the ankle. You cut a small strip of tape which then goes around the ankle and you squish it all together so it holds.

If you don't have help, you will more than likely need to wrap your biddy in a towel.
