The Old Folks Home

Good to hear from you @Kusanar! That must have been very hard to see that stallion in such bad condition. I would have wanted to adopt him and bring him home.
The stallion was dead and nothing but bones, I DID want to bring him home, but figured that would be frowned at... His mare on the other hand, she's 29 years old, and they were a 2 horse herd, she is alone now and looks A LOT older this year than she did last year, I doubt she will last much longer... I wanted to bring HER home.

Close the drapes, put out the lights. Lots easier to catch in the dark.
Lol, harder to see in the dark too....

Just please don't step on him in the dark
I thought the same thing!! He's not too bad to try to catch, he can't fly, just flutters around, so he doesn't go higher than knee high and most of the time just gets on the floor and RUNS away...

Ls I ordered about 200 chicks a year for several years. It was a pain but we built the pens yo house a bunch of them after they were brooded.
A few times completely sold out and had to order more.
But most of our customers wanted POL pullets and the rest wanted 6-7 month old roosters.
You should have heard Murry when I said I wanted a 50 cockerels.
Cackle has their fry pan special as just large breed cockerels used to be as low as .28cents each depending on quantity now they're close to double that but still cheap. Other hatcheries it's just leghorns. I think should all offer them cheap before they toss them in the grinder.
I thought about ordering a bunch from Cackle when I got capon tools to practice on but didn't want to think of the feed bill.
Good thing I didn't cause I've attempted a few times with my own chicks and never got further than scratching the surface and then 'chickened out' lol :lol:

I couldn't do it either lol
The only reason I ordered so many roosters was I had a bunch of customers that wanted fresh plump roosters for their stew pot.
I ran out pretty regular though.
I never knew how many would show up and how many I could get rid of.

Kusanar can't you report the owner for neglect? That is so sad.
It's good to see you back.

Micro the new cold front is suppose to hit us in the morning. It's going to go from 60-40 in a matter of a few hours. I think it may hit sooner. The temps have dropped a lot in the last hour already. Back down to freezing at night again tomorrow night.

These are the famous "wild" horses that inhabit some of the islands on the east coast. There is an organization that monitors them pretty closely, but the only owner (if you can call it that) is the state they live in.

As I said on another thread, collisions with the cars of the tourists that come to see them are an unfortunately common occurrence with the banker ponies. On one of the North Carolina islands (Okracoke), they reluctantly decided that the risk and resulting liability was too great, so the ponies there are no longer free-roaming.

Thank you for explaining this Bunnylady.

Bunnylady explained it well, the Maryland side horses are owned by Maryland and are monitored by the national parks service as they live in a national park. They are not cared for as they are trying to keep them wild. The stallion was dead when the park rangers got to the scene or they likely would have put him down to keep him from suffering, but they don't get medical care, supplemented feed, or water other than the natural fresh water on the island.

The ones on the Va side of the island are owned by the chincoteague fire department and as they are on a wildlife preserve, they actually have a permit to be allowed to live there. The permit only allows 150 adult ponies so each year, the ones on the Virginia side are rounded up and almost all of the foals are sold off, a few are returned yearly to keep young, breeding age horses on the island.
