The Old Folks Home

it is so damn tough to deal with that poor Raudy here has a chronic licking he makes one side so bare he is 14 corgi x shelti just the sweetest temper he will act all tough
but say him name gently he stops
My in-laws adopted a old Llewellin Setter yrs back. Just showed up at their house one winter with huge balls of ice froze to it's leg fur. They thawed it out and called the # on the tag, no answer, finally got a hold of the owners family, it was their dad's, elderly man who had just died. They said it was in his will that the dog was to be put down (smart dog, seen death coming and traveled over the mountain and through the woods miles to get to their house)
In-laws asked if they could have him, the family said well the dog ran away nothing they could do about it and thanked them.
Dog was beautiful when they got it, don't know if it was the cheap food they were feeding him but he started scratching and gnawing licking loosing hair, stank.
I heard a commercial on the radio for that Dinovite stuff for dogs, told them to get it. Didn't take long and he was like a new dog. They had him a few yrs before he died of old age, super nice pretty dog.

Have you tried bitter apple on it?

@CapricornFarm. I'm back to what passes for normal for me. Yesterday my appetite came back with a vengeance. Waffles and bacon for breakfast. Big bowl of German Rivvel Soup for lunch and casserole for supper. I need to get to the doctor as the nodules on my fingers are growing and I developed a new one but I keep hesitating as I don't want to get exposed to anything else while my resistance is down.

@Beer can those NN youngsters are just so darned ugly they are cute.

For the corgi with the licking problem, I use Bitter Apple spray on our dogs when they start licking on a spot. I also use it on my plants when the kitties start nibbling. That stuff is just pure nasty. Get it on your hands and touch a glass near the rim and then drink from the glass and you will be tasting the spray for days.

Cold and soggy here again today. I think they are calling for crap weather through tomorrow then it is going to start turning nice again. I think I saw highs in the 60s on Thursday. Yay! Is all I can say.

Plus one week till chicks come in at Orschelns. :celebrate Not that I'm keeping track or anything.;) DH asked me how many I planned to get and I said only 4 bantams. I'm hopeful I can pick out OEGB chicks at this point in time from dealing with my own. I really need a couple of pure bred cockerels and a couple more pure bred hens to diversify my gene pool a bit so I can start breeding for resistance. He just chuckled at me and said, yeah sure. I'd be going. Oh that one is sooooo cute and dragging it home. He predicted a dozen. I told him in his dreams.

Man it's going to be hard to prove him wrong.

deb -- A colonoscopy isn't so bad as it's a nice nap. It's the prep the night beforehand that makes you glad to get some induced sleep. Some cleansing formulations are, uhm, kinder and more palatable than others.

Penny -- I had a devil of a time hatching Marans, too. Something about my high altitude or bad shipping or whatever. (Shameless plug coming up) I went on eBay and ordered Marans eggs from foxfirepapillons and hatched 9 out of 12. A miracle!! They gave no guarantee about shipping eggs to New Mexico because our Albuquerque hub Post Office has assorted high cliff drops off of conveyor belts. I think one egg was cracked and a couple scrambled in the ordeal. I was thrilled with the hatch rate (especially since the egg price was rather low at bid) and even more thrilled with the quality of the chicks. Stew the Roo is show worthy.

I cannot disparage our local USPS in Corrales as our carriers actually care and do a great job of getting the mail to the customer. I've gotten several items and boxes of hatching eggs delivered to my doorstep rather than languishing at the Post Office or in the cluster boxes at the foot of our street. We're a small village, so everybody knows everybody either by name or face which helps. Keepin' it friendly.

Really? Cool!

Has anybody ever bred any bantam NNs?

There are so very few birds that are disease resistant to Marek's I think white leghorns are one, Egyptian Fayoumis are the second. There is a third that I can't pull off the top of my head.

Naturally my Buff Os are some of the most susceptible ranking right up there with Silkies.

I still wish I had done more research.
