So what is @ronott1 is it a wasp

It is a type of wasp.

Megarhyssa macrurus (common name giant ichneumon wasp),[1] is a species of large ichneumon wasp.[2]

It is a parasitoid, notable for its extremely long ovipositor which it uses to deposit an egg into a tunnel in dead wood bored by its host, the larva of a similarly large species of horntail. Another of its common names is stump stabber referring to this behaviour.

It could have come in from hurricanes from who knows where.

I've never had one. But good ole mud it a wonderful poultice. Just ask any wild critter or old timer. My dad used it on us as kids.

You do have red paper wasps in Alabama. The description is not a big though. The are 1.5 inches long. Maybe the wings and antennae make it seem bigger?

They are supposed to be nasty so stay away from it
