The Old Folks Home

I may try an experiment later this summer. When we used to go primitive camping, we took 2 of the big gallon sized cans (empty, and clean) punched holes in the top of them, then ran twine, so one was above the other. In the top one, we'd put some water, then put thin cheesecloth in the water, and drape it downward around the bottom can. Then we'd put food that needed to be kept cold in the bottom can. It really worked, and kept things good and cold. I want to borrow from that, and see if I can cool my coop down this summer.

I know it's an evaporation principal, and we have high humidity, but the thinner cheesecloth allows enough evaporation for it to work here, even in the higher humidity. I don't intend to do the entire coop, but would love to do it across the back, and on each end. I have fans, so air circulation is not a problem.

Morning everyone. Getting ready to go out and let the birds in their respective runs for the day and check on mammas an their babes. I have to admit, they are so much fun to watch when they are co-broody and the chicks are shuffling back and forth between mothers. They seem to know who 'mom' is but I sure don't any more.

Talked to DH last night about Guineas. I told him I want to house them seperate from the chooks and he asked me what I had in mind. I told him the Northwest corner of the barn where there is a Dutch door. All I would have to do is enclose that corner with sheet metal and bingo! Guinea pen. I could even go with an outside run for them for bad weather day confinement. He agreed that it was a good idea! Yay!

Plans for the day. We have about 3+ cords of wood gathered and split so far, 6 more to go so we are working back in the timber knocking down trees and chaining rounds. My body is sooooo sore from the physical work but it is a good feeling. I've been dieting since my latest steroid treatment drove my weight up. So far I've lost 8 pounds so the heavy work is a blessing.

Y'all have a great Saturday and I'll talk to you later!

Sounds like your DH is a real keeper Micro :clap Go get you some guineas! :lau Glad to hear you're dropping the weight... could you lose a few pounds for me while you're at it? Good luck with that upscale evaporative cooling system for the coop Clue. Hope it works for you and I know the birds will appreciate it! :)

Lots of hugs going around lately... Thanks! We all need them though we sometimes don't realize it or seek them out. It's a very caring "family" we have here in TOFH. :hugs

I'll second that! :hugs:D

I can totally agree with everyone about the heat. It's miserable July hot here and has been for about 4 weeks with highs in the mid 90s and humidity to match.

I was out most of the morning. We decided to split wood and finished up the rounds that we had. From there to the runs where I raked and extended the rooster run. Pulled 5 more roosters from the flocks and plopped them down in it after telling them no blood shed. Like they are going to listen to me.

It's 87 degrees right now with humidity in the high 60s. I'm drenched with sweat. Off to shower, change clothes and make lunch. I'm not budging from this house and the AC until at least 3 pm!
