The Old Folks Home

I like the wood catchers on your DR but does it go vertical? When you are handling 100 pound rounds the last thing we want to do is hoist them up to the splitter. Ours goes vertical like pictured, which is a lot easier on our backs.
Nope, horizontal only. That is why I grooved and wedge split the big ones at least in half. No way I was going to heft them up on the splitter and no way it could split a full round. Had enough trouble with the half rounds!

Only 10 ton?
Yep. I bought it when I figured out my hands were not up to the shock of hand splitting the roughly 1 run that Al left too big for our liking. I didn't need a more expensive 25+ ton splitter for that. And because it is electric, I could run it inside the little barn so no weather issues. Less useful for splitting a larger quantity of wood since it has to be done relatively close to an outlet. They did sell a gas motor for it so you can swap out the electric and split away from power but I don't have that. I would buy a bigger gas splitter that can run vertical even if that motor is still available now that I am splitting substantially more wood.

It isn't having any trouble splitting the smaller stuff I'm cutting now that the big guy is done. It splits both directions moving the wedge against the wood rather than the other way around. But it IS slow (22 sec end to end) and doesn't have an "auto return" so if the round splits before the wedge has gone far enough to allow then next round to be put behind the wedge, you have to stand there and hold the lever until the wedge has gone far enough.

Our split and return time isn't too bad on ours. I think we got it at TSC and paid about 1400 for it. 22 ton was the smallest that they had on hand. We wanted to get something that would be able to handle big hickory rounds that we harvest. When we were splitting them by hand, the best we could do with them was cleave the wood from around the hearts and keep the hearts as keeper logs. No way you could get a maul to go through those hearts.

So we went with the most horse power that they had and that was the 28. We also knew that for our application, electiricity wouldn't handle it.

Agenda for today? Split wood and buy groceries. Oh.....joy.

Got a question for you guys. What do you do with a broody hen in hot weather?

I have another hen broody and I'm reluctant to give her eggs as during the last broodies I dealt with the temp went up to the mid 90s. I had a lot of dead in the shell chicks and one with eye and beak deformities that I read were due to a heat issue so I really don't want to head down that road again.

Do I try to hatch out a few chicks in the house and try to graft them to mom? Do I give her the eggs and hope for the best?

Suggestions?

90 is not that hot. I would break her or give her chicks. The rabbit cage in the garage works

Back in the day I used a water bottle light mist it seems cruel but it worked & saved me from being attacked even when I wore gardening gloves it still hurts just an opinion:confused:

Do you WANT more chicks at the moment? If not, I would break her. Since I have no rooster I always break my broodies starting as soon as I know they are broody. One clue is the hen that is in the nest when I open the barn in the morning is still there when I close up ;) Definitely takes longer to break them in hot weather though.

Anais (Faverolles) just gave up yesterday, she was in the buster for 3 days, I gave her a chance and she didn't stay out of the nest long so back to the buster she went for another 2 days.

She had only about 12 hours of "nest time" before seeing the inside of the buster. I don't know why she hasn't done some decorating, she spends enough time in there!

I'm beginning to see a different side of Amazon. Dh ordered a fuel pump for his zero turn Fri. He paid 11.09 for 2 day shipping. Later I ordered on a different card another adapter for my dishwasher I paid 5.39 shipping.
My total was 13.98.they charged my bank twice for my order and they put my item in the same box as dh's fuel pump he paid 11.09 shipping for.
I called them today to ask them to return one of my 13.98 charges. And that's when they told me it was being shipped with DH fuel pump.
I told her he paid 11.09 for 2 day shipping. And if he was not going to get the 2 day shipping they should adjust the shipping.
Then the pic of the adapter they are sending me is a male adapter. I told her I already have one it won't work. I told her the item I bought said it was female.
Then she said I could return it. But I will have to pay the shipping!
I think I will stick with ebay.
I dont get double charged and most times I get free shipping!
I feel ripped off.
I know she gave me a promotional credit for dh's shipping but that's only good for stuff sold by Amazon not their sellers. So who knows when well use it. And if I had not checked or paid attention they would have made a bundle off of us. I dont like it.
