The Old Folks Home

Looks like yesterday while I was at work we had a hawk attack. Noticed our alpha rooster today wasn't looking right and when I went outside seems he's missing his left eye, right sinus, end of his beak... ick.
I spread some oxytetracycline on it and gave him some oral antibiotics but I am thinking tomorrow I will likely have to end it for him.
Off to go grieve with the family now.

How Sad!

Did you lose any hens?

My Brinsea came though for me again. While I'm not thrilled at the prospect of brooding chicks again, I'm so glad I found the abandoned chick and brought the rest inside to hatch. Much pleasanter brooding than burying.

I think I got a ringer in with this bunch. The little chipmunk guy asleep in the center is about half again the size of the other three.I'm wondering if I stuffed a Welly cross egg under my broody accidentally, although all 4 eggs were light golden brown so I dunno. No speckles should mean not Welly. Maybe it's just a big chick. It was the first one hatched that I rescued.

Now to finish building my new brooder so I can move them out of the house.

@CapricornFarm, your building virus is catching!
Nice Hatch!

At least the little thing has some friends.

SGC hard to tag that post with a like so I'll just tag it with a :hugs

So sorry about your rooster. Sounds like he gave his all to save his girls. It never rains but it pours.

I spent the morning cleaning the bantam coop. One thing I can say about them is that they aren't as smelly as the big birds, not as dirty but man they make up for it with dust, bedding dust, feather dander, food dust. I expect to cough up a feather at any time.

My broody hen Blackberry is tuk tuk tukking around the coop looking for eggs to set on. Danged roosters are leading her around showing her empty nests. I played dirty though and put my almost blind hen, Sparkle in her old nest.

Ick! One of my quail was attacked by its flock mates and they were eating its breast while still walking around! Birds are so barbaric! Idk if it was wounded in a fight but now it got treated, nutridrench, and electrolytes in water. Put by itself. I may have to smuggle it in tonight, worried about flies getting to the wound.

Yeah, doesn't speak well of the dinosaurs, does it? :sick

Got three of the new babies drinking two eating. The forth was just born around noon today so not pushing things much with it. The biggest chick, dh named it Jefe. It was so cute. I dipped it's bill in the water twice and it swallowed, then marched over to the little bowl and took another drink. I told dh that little one was destined to be the boss so he named it Jefe. No matter what it turns out to be, it's here for life. The poor little thing was so weak and worn out last night I was worried about it. It sure has made a comeback.
