The Old Folks Home

Well....it looks like I'm going to have to find a new job. I have been working part time as a meal carrier for the nutrition program for a organization called Friends of Elder Citizens. The main office is about 40 miles from our senior center. Our center is the main money maker, but we are going to get shut down. It's almost an understatement when I say that there is a lot of very angry people....particularly the seniors.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg...

Well, that totally stinks.

My parents volunteer with Meals on Wheels; they have their regular day and route, and often fill in when someone else can't make it. The importance of nutritious food and regular contact simply can't be over-emphasized.

What will be done to fill this need, if this organization isn't going to be doing it any more?

That is so sad JD! Why is it closing? Lots of seniors depend on those meals and home visits.

JD that is so sad.

They tell us that there's no money....which none of us buy that story. We know better because we know what money comes in. At our center the nutrition program brings in between $1200.00 and $1600 a month after expenses. Then there is the transportation program. Gross income for last month was almost $14,000.00. Expenses were about $9,600....so that isn't losing money either. Then there is the thrift store...some how it wasn't making what it should...but wasn't terrible either.
Something is fishy. I just can't figure it out. What's strange is the new executive and board has been obsessed with turning activities section into a big thrift store and putting the seniors into the part that is now the thrift store. Now the money has supposedly run out and they are just going to shut the center down.

Something smells rotten....

DW made it up there but is wiped out now!
She might be wiped out, but she sure looks pretty happy to be there! :)
now they're going to file for chapter 5 and 11 protection...^@*!.
That is a real shame JD. Since your county seems to be running in the black, is there any way you can separate from the other and become autonomous? Maybe you could find an angel investor that would loan the funds long term at low interest to start up? Maybe some of the seniors could volunteer their time to help keep employment costs down and it would give them "something to do" to keep them engaged and operating? Sorry it looks like you're out a PT job.

Last but not least, Congrats to you Diva on getting to 100K posts! Quite the milestone.
