The Old Folks Home

My BF is also pretty hard of hearing - see the trend?

I DO have hearing loss on both sides, accompanied by tinnitus (nice scream going on right now). My favorite oldest daughter often accused/s me of being deaf, or selective hearing. The truth is, she speaks right in the octave where my hearing is worst, and WHISPERS most of the time, or turns her head away while talking, further compounding my ability to hear her. :he I have repeatedly explained these issues to her and asked her to speak directly at me and to SPEAK UP! :rant I would hear her "making some soft noise", identifying that she was saying something, but not what. She no longer lives with me, so not a routine issue any longer, but it got to the point that I told her if she didn't do these things I was going to ignore her. I couldn't hear her or understand her words anyway, so why worry and fret about it? :idunno

Besides, if there's something she wants me to hear, the onus is on her to do what's necessary for me to receive her message.

Does anyone here know anything about spinning wheels? I have an "old" one that I don't think I have all the parts for but I'm also not sure. I also have something that I think is the bobbin but it's broke. When I was a kid the wheel and the treadle (I think that's what it is, at least on a sewing machine and lathe it's a treadle) had a flat leather strap going between them to move the wheel as you treadled. It's long gone but if I got a new belt I'm not sure how it would attach.

Because I need something else to do... BF mentioned he'd like the treadle to no longer drag on the floor and he was going to nail it back to the underside... and I may have flipped out a little.

I think the bobbin thing goes between the goalposts. Not sure why there's a hole on the flat part on the bottom, though.

I know the leather belt goes into the dangly bit here, from what I remember from my childhood, but how, I do not know.

what is left of the leather belt is stuck in the treadle. QUOTE]

Hi there, SCG!

Our spinning wheel -- family heirloom -- is fairly complete except for the belt that goes from the big wheel down to the bobbin (think like bicycle gears.) It looks like you're missing a treadle arm. The bobbin does go between the goal posts.
Here's pictures for comparison:

On mine it probably is broken. I gather that it should have two flanges, but it's evident there's a rough spot on the flyer where something broke off.

(This wheel's last use was probably back in the 1890-1900 time frame or earlier in Pennsylvania and was brought to CA strictly for decorative use. No doubt my great-grandfather's seven kids had something to do with the missing armature as we kids were never allowed to touch it.)

Yes, her genetics lessons. Scott was her star pupil, I just scrolled down to dog pictures all the time. It wasn't just the audience at FB. She was mad that she was on BYC for so many years and only had a meager amount of "likes." I told her when you give likes you get likes.

She jumped ship for Facebook and told me she had 500 likes right from her start. I said on Facebook people "like" things because there are rewards for doing so. It's not personal.

Mutts Fan, we only had one dog that ended up deaf. The vet said she had a" minor "infection after being spayed at 7 yrs. of age. I believe he gave us gentocin for her. Within 2 days she was totally deaf and very anxious about it.

She would constantly stare at us, I imagine waiting for us to speak. I taught her by slapping my hand on the floor- she'd feel the vibes and look up- then I would motion for her to come. She did very well with the signals but, looked anxious all the time. I felt so sorry for her.

If it was a gradual loss - I imagine it's easier to get used to but, total deafness in a day or so???? Another vet on the black list.

As to humans, my mother had bad hearing in her left ear. I have some hearing loss(at certain octaves), left ear, so does my son.

Just looked and here's the detail on the flyer. Kind of interesting!

Looks like both arms on that flyer are broken. They are supposed to be as long as the bobbin; while spinning, the yarn is moved from one hook to the next to allow the yarn to get wound on the full length of the bobbin.
