The Old Folks Home

Not one of my more cheerful days.

Woke up wondering what I could find about weight restrictions, etc. Not advised to lift 50 pounds. Not advised to lift much at all is what I read, especially with spinal osteoporosis. I'm getting a copy of the report but I remember reading that L1 was affected which is in the area where compression fractures can happen. Not happy, no siree.

DH, bless him has been trying to come up with solutions for me. Best one is to open feed bags and dip half of the weight out of them. Moving 25 pounds is better than 50. He says and he could have a point. Still. We live on a hobby farm. Lifting stuff happens.

I'm 65 years old and having to learn to do things all over again. I just want to stand on top of a hill and scream out my anger. I've always been so independent and yes, strong for my size.

Plus, I'm torn between needing to not carry extra weight and not falling below 127 pounds which is what I read is the 'danger' weight for developing osteoporosis. Women under 127 pounds are at a higher risk. I've been under than most of my life until after the 'big change'. RIght now on our scale, my AM weight is 128.5.

So I ate a cookie! With chocolate m & m's in it. Bought them yesterday at Hyvee and stuck them in the freezer. It was delicious! No guilt at all.

Plus it says I need to give up caffeine in my coffee. Say is isn't so!!!! Talk about adding insult to injury.:hit

Maybe I should eat another cookie?!:clap

I saw that operation on TLC :tongue:sick. I've never been a member of the itty bitty club. In fact I'm remembered in high school as the girl with the big rack....no lie. Yes, my shoulders have huge dents in them from straps but I'll be hanged if I would ever go through that breast reduction surgery..
I suppose it all depends on how much bone is lost!

If your blood calcium is in the 10s or higher, calcium loss can be reversed. Check into it

I'm sure "my girls" could use the excess they'd take from you Peeps but, I can't take that ICK factor either. Mine will never reach my waist unless I bend way over.

@microchick, scream away - frustration is better let out than kept in. Trust me that I know all about making work 'adaptations'. I like to say that I can still do everything I once could - it just takes a little longer and comes at a higher price physically.

I hear ya, @sourland. I'm doing my best to adapt. Just doing my usual kicking and screaming along the way.

Dunno, @ronott1. No calcium level has been done. Guess they figure that if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and swims like a duck....well, you know. They are going to do a D3 level next month so maybe they will check my calcium levels then. I have always had ample blood calcium. When I go down the check list for risk factors I have over half of them tho plus the Bone Density Test they did was a full scan type that checks your lower back and hips. Pretty conclusive. Plus the doc said it was over the number (-2.5) where he prescribes treatment. Gotta believe the guy plus I saw the test.

Just don't like this at all. But I'll get used to it....I hope.

Aging isn't for sissies. I just didn't realize how *hard* it would be... I think mentally mostly. Dang! I realize now I took the 20's through 40's for granted. Okay, it's hard physically, too, as body parts begin to protest and fail.

I am hoping that with age will come wisdom and gentle acceptance, but it's counterintuitive right now as the will is to resist.

Well said, Peep and Sour.

I encountered a little old lady at work once who upon me asking her how she was as I handed her her morning pill cup, looked at me and said. "Whoever called these the golden years was out of their ****** mind."

Never heard it put better.

Blood calcium levels should be in your blood tests over the years. You can look at those numbers and chart them to see if they are going up over time.

Calcium is regulated almost as closely as sodium. It is never supposed to move below 9 and above 10. If it is in the 10 and higher range, then there is a benign tumor causing it to go up. The increased calcium is mined from the bones.

Being only 65, osteoporosis is a prime symptom of this. It usually goes on for 10 plus years before it is diagnosed.

I dare say it is very incompetent of your Dr.s to not check into this. Sadly it seems to be a sexist thing since women have this more than men and Medicine is very patriarchal.

A quick take away is the just because a blood test says that your calcium is in the normal range, do not believe it! This is a very under diagnosed problem

A second take away is that if your blood calcium is in the 10s, then taking a lot of Vitamin D can make the problem worse. If you have high calcium and low vitamin D, then your body is trying to flush vitamin D to stop the calcium over load in your body.

Too much calcium in the blood is very bad and will kill you

It's been raining here for days, deluge this afternoon for hours. Making up for the summer drought I guess.

I have never liked milk but Mom made us drink a glass every day growing up. Bones are like rock. I found out years later that I'm lactose intolerant and milk upsets my stomach, but I can eat cheeses and yogurt so not as bad as some folks. I love Fairlife chocolate moo, no lactose!

We got a new bus for center!
