The Old Folks Home

Thank you all for the welcome! Didn't win the lottery again. What is up with that? I mean I have to win sooner or later right?

46 weeks till retirement (unless that lottery win comes in) and at work, they are placing bets on how long I will last. I think a lot of money is on next week when partner and I go to look at lots. They're wrong, and worse, they won't let me put any money on a date. :wee
I did that! I put in my two weeks notice like a good little employee. I was working 12 hour shifts at a time, three days a week and driving 100 miles to do it round trip. One night the DON came in and announced that they wanted the nurses working 12 hour shifts to start pulling two 12 hour shifts a day for two days, one day off then a 12 shift or 12 shift two day rotation.

I was standing at my med cart looking over new orders and without a word, took my med keys out of my pocket and handed them to the boss. Hey, I said, I only have one week to go, I've put in my notice as far as I'm concerned I'm clocking out and out of here!

Never saw a director of nurses start to stutter and apologize so fast in my entire life. Gave me a real sense of power it did!

Of course I also once told a department head when he threatened the entire staff with drug testing that I'd pee in a cup any time they wanted me to. Considering the crappy way they treated the nurses it was a wonder everybody wasn't using hard drugs! He stomped off and the staff applauded me. First time I ever got an ovation for mouthing off!

I think the powers that be were always glad to see me go.

You'll love retirement @NewBoots. 6 Saturdays followed by Sunday.

102 INCHES OF RAIN? Holey moley is all I can say!

We had such a miserable hot summer and for some reason I have the feeling that 19 will be even worse one way or the other. Either hotter or wetter. Frankly I can live with wetter easier......no wait.....hotter isn't all that bad. Of course that's talking out of the fact that the past three days it hasn't broken freezing here. It's like mother nature took a look at the calendar and said "Oh LOOK! It's January! Time for everyone to freeze their freaking bums off!"

Seriously, chickens don't even want to go out. Dogs don't want to go out, Heck I don't even want to go out!

I am finally starting to kick this crud in my chest, head, ears....geeesh it's everywhere. I've hacked so much mucus out of my bronchial system that my uvula is doing the backstroke.

I was a nurse for a looooooong time and I never did find a logical answer for the question of how does the human body make so much mucous when it is sick anyway? Asked doctors, they just shrugged and said ; 'Idunno, but it can make a load of it!' No help at all.

Anyway, I seriously hope none of you all get this. It sucks.
I hope it clears up for you soon!

Hey, I have a GREAT idea! Let's work all our nurses into an early grave and endanger the patients at the same time, 2 birds with one stone. Yep, brilliant plan.

It is easier to tell the "boss" where to go when you only have a week to go. :)

Since Florence destroyed the greenhouse, for the first time in many years, I'm not having to tend a fire in the wood stove out there. Can't say I really miss that, though getting fresh veg all winter was nice. :hmm Oh, well, maybe next year. Our heat pump isn't working either - the guy who supposedly fixed it this past Spring missed the fact that it instantly blows a fuse when the heat kicks in. Our primary source of heat is small gas heater for the time being. Looks like the guy who was lined up to patch the roof is a no-show.

Over 102 inches of rain in 2018, 7+ in December alone. . . and it's sprinkling now. I'm so sick of mud I could scream, but at least it's not cold (I keep trying to imagine that as snow, and count myself blessed! 2018 was one for the record books; I'm praying for 2019 to be boring as heck!

102 inches! That's got our 98.4 inches beat. Unfortunately 68 of those inches have been since August. Mud mud everywhere I look....ugh!

My driveway is an icy disaster .Spent over an hour on it last night with sand and salt and it just started snowing on top. Hopefully that will give some traction.
I am not near retirement but after a particularly crappy day, I stormed out last may, went to hr and turned in my badge. I am lucky the guy from hr didn't take my resignation and walked me over to senior leadership to describe what happened. I'm also lucky that two other people in my department witnessed it, and came forward and that senior leadership attempted to correct it. It would have definitely sucked to not have a job but some situations are worse. You have to decide what you're willing to put up with. My sanity could not handle the previous situation any longer

The two youngest granddaughters scared the crap out of us yesterday. They wanted to play outside with their walki-talkis. I have one inside, and was listening. After a little bit, I heard a man's voice on the walki-talki. I looked at my husband, and he didn't have one. He said that someone must be on the same frequency. While he was saying that, I looked at the monitor, and didn't see them. (We have a surveillance system). I ran out the door, with their mother right behind me. Nope, they were NOT in the yard.

The little stinkers had walked all the way down the driveway to the neighbor's house, that has the dogs. They're professional dog trainers. They were in the yard with the dogs, when the kids came up. They tried using one of the walki-talkies, but didn't know how, so they were headed into the house to call on the phone, when they saw my daughter headed down the drive towards them. The kids, and dogs played a bit, then my daughter talked with them, and let them know that unless an adult was with them, they were to play in the yard. The only time they are to leave our yard, is with Mommy, Grandma, or Grandpa. I'm glad she didn't overreact, but firmly got her point across to them.

Morning all! No rain here. Ample sunshine and just plain cold with highs in the 40s. No rain expected til Sunday night and into Monday along with some warmer temps.

As far as working in medicine is concerned, I'm surprised anybody works in that profession at all. IL had mandatory overtime, meaning that if the employer was short a nurse and falling below the set number of employees that they had to man the stations, they could walk up to a nurse and just say, 'you are working a double' and walk away. If the nurse checked out and went home, it was considered dereliction of duty and abandonment of post just like the military and they could pull your ticket. I saw it happen on several occasions to including myself. Not much fun working exhausted. Not safe at all.

I can't imagine trying to work with what I've been fighting for the past 9 + days. I'm slowly improving and see the Rheumy's PA on Monday. If I'm still coughing by then I'll see about getting something for it but that pharmacy assistant was just broadcasting virus every time she breathed. Probably got told to 'come on in, we are short handed. You can work in the back and away from people'. Ignorance is bliss.
