The Old Folks Home

My little construction supervisor, Sprocket, is almost 18 years old. He is a complete sweetheart, although he was quite the barker when I lived in a more populated area. Now we sometimes call him Old Shep as he follows me around, slow and arthritic, as I go from the coop to the garden. He is such a dear. Weighs just under 6 lbs.

deb, I'm surprised you went this long without a melt down. You've been through some major surgery, which is nothing to sneeze at. Your body knows it's dealing with some major trauma on the inside, despite outward appearances. While you do recognize pain, getting tired more easily, not being able to do as much, etc., there are plenty of emotional signals being sent to the brain that are more subtle, that are not always consciously recognized, but they're there.

Heck, even going on a diet can make many people grumpy. Dietary changes make an impact, not only on a person's physical status, but on their emotional status, and mood too. You've had surgery, topped with major dietary changes, and your dietary changes are ongoing for awhile.

For 2 - 3 weeks after your surgery, ideally someone should have been looking after you, without the added stress of having to deal with your grandmother. Definitely someone else should have been doing the bulk of looking after your grandmother for a couple months, until you've had time to get a bit more healing under your belt. It's not a question of whether you love her, or how much. We all know you love her tremendously. It's not about you being a capable person. You're one of the most capable people I know.

Whether you realize it or not, the thoughts regarding your grandmother going into a different situation takes it's toll on your emotions too. Even though it's for the best, the transition is stressful emotionally.

There are not many times in life that people should be entirely focused on themselves, but this is one of those times for you.

From experience, usually an emotional meltdown like that, is emotionally healing. For me, it tends to help purge the negative, and do a reset. Once it's over, I can continue on with renewed resolve. I hope this is what happened for you.

We went to the stadium for the fireworks display. The event started at 6. They had a lot of things for the kids, and it was free. 4 different types of bouncy houses, face painting, sand art, rock walls, and the harness things with the rubber bands to jump on trampolines. The only thing the baby did not do, was the rock wall. It was the first time on the trampoline thing for all 3 of them. Even the baby was almost able to do flips in the air. Had she been given more time, she would have figured it out.

The one that amazed me was my middle granddaughter. She hit that rock wall at a run, and never slowed down. If her feet slipped, she hung on with her hands, and would search with her feet until she found the peg, then kept going. She made it to the top likety split. That's when the (sort of) difficulty began.

She began kicking off the wall, to repel and come down. Um, nope. She just dangled. She did it again. Nope. She dangled. She's only 5, small, and lightweight. She didn't weigh enough for the safety line to slowly lower her. She had to grab the pegs, and literally pull herself down far enough the attendant could grab her, and finish pulling her down. The attendant commented that had he known, he would have attached a line to her harness, so he could pull her back down. She was so happy she made it to the top, and was undaunted about having to pull herself back down.

The fireworks started at 9. They were amazing. Better than the ones at Disney. They lasted over an hour.

When we left, I didn't feed us supper, thinking we would eat stuff there. All they had was snack type foods, cotton candy, popcorn, candy apples, donuts, ice cream, snow cones, etc., but no burgers, hot dogs, tacos, or meal type food. When we left, we went to iHop. All in all it was a wonderful time for everyone.

BTW, I am thinking about getting one of these: https://www.pkgrills.com/the-pk-grill-smoker-classic-silver/

My mother bought a used one from a yard sale when I was about 12. My girls were young when I inherited it, and I used it for years. During a hurricane, a tree limb fell on it, crushing the stand, and when it hit the cement with the force, and weight of the limb, it split the bottom in two. We used it in our family for over 30 years at the time, and I have no idea how old it was when she bought it. I never found another one, until recently when I did an online search.

Dh wants a gas grill. I got a nice gas grill after this one broke. While there are several advantages to a gas grill, they don't outweigh the way the food turns out using this grill. I had considered the Egg, because it cooks in similar manner, but it's very expensive, and requires the use of pellets. This one uses wood or charcoal. I like that, since I prefer the taste of food cooked over oak wood, but if I'm in a hurry, can use charcoal. Hickory nuts, soaked in water, can be tossed on the charcoal to add a nice hickory flavor too.

It sounds like a very nice evening!

Farm kids can be very tough little things can't they!

It is like a traeger pellet BBQ. I love it!

It has advantages like propane but is wood fueled so you get good smoke.

I agree with the inspector. No pale for me, I prefer darker ales.

OK, I was really impressed with your daughter until I got to the part where she is 5. So I gather you meant middle GRAND daughter. Still impressive that she could clamber up the wall at age 5!

YES, I meant GRANDdaughter, and have edited the post. She was one of the few that made it to the top.
