The Old Folks Home

People get overly excited when we get a few nice days here, and plant. They forget that we are still in April. April in Utah means, nice days, and some cold, even down into the freezing. So, I wait until May to plant my veggies.
I am getting ready to plant some herbs in some pots. Haven't done that before, but I'm thinking it will be better than what I did at the last place we were at. Does anyone know how mint can spread?? Well, I'm thinking a pot just might be the ticket to keeping that stuff under control. Have some lavender to go in, some Cilantro, sweet basil, and oh, will plant some chives in a pot this year.

Oh good Goddess, I just calculated back to the evening I gave Punkin three eggs when she went broody in the dog bed! Two weeks, plus five days.....It's Day 19!!!!!

Somebody heat the water! Get me some clean shoe-laces! Oh, wait. Wrong "tapes" in my head there for a moment. Whew!

She has not left the nest today.

In that case, I feel sorry for Mr. Wilson!

(Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Congrats!)

Y'know, tick, some folks call those hanging dead branches "widowmakers," but I think it's because they may fall on you rather than because you may fall going after them.

Did you get half drowned like we did a couple of days ago? I think the "official" total at the airport was slightly over an inch of precipitation, but it seems to be located in the driest spot in the county. We had more like 2 - 3 inches of rain fall in our neighborhood on Friday morning; I had a young flood to deal with over at the horse barn. There is a large low spot in the pasture behind my house that used to be a duck pond (I dug it a number of years ago, but there hasn't been water enough to keep it full for the last few years). Rain drains from near the barn into it during these deluges, so it may contain water for quite a while after we get dumped on like that. My two miniature horses were standing in the water, pawing; Hubby said they were looking for frogs. I told him the goats said they were looking for their minds, as clearly they had lost them; a goat believes that any sensible animal avoids water at all costs!

The story about climbing trees reminded me of something that happened here a few years ago (have I told this one already?) My son and a friend of his had been climbing one of the trees in the yard, and for some reason had taken a rope up in the tree with them. When they came down, they left the rope up there. Some time later, I needed the rope for something, and not seeing anyone around, I shinnied up the tree to get the rope. While I was up there, DS and another friend came cruising through the yard. I can still hear the shock in the other kid's voice when he said, "Dude! Your mom's up a tree!" Having lived with me all of his life, DS saw nothing unusual about it at all.

I climbed power poles and telephone poles for a living. trees are cake to me. have climbed one to get to another many times. yes the ole widowmaker. My ex's were never that lucky...... 3 times yearly pay for deaths on the job....

heck yes we got the rain during the second storm that afternoon. Shorty was earlier on dry land then all heck broke loose and suddenly he was stuck on his high spot surrounded by water. The chickens ran with me for shelter under the car port. Their coop was to far away and I guess when they saw me start to run, they followed the Alpha male. Ended up with 6 cats, 2 dogs and approx 30 chickens under there til it stopped but then everything was covered in water. Lucky it drained soon, except for the low spots.

When I first moved out here about 6 years ago, my neighbors were always waiting for me to fall off a tree limb, even taking bets. Too bad I never was allowed to bet for myself. My kids are always amazed at the stuff I did and still do. Call it a death wish without knowing it, I guess.

Darn, Bama, that IS your happy smile. Poor Mr Wilson. What does yo unhappy face look like??????

ah, why thank you Wisher, I will make that smack very soft and , well, you know. snickers. and you think 50 is bad, just wait for your 60s.

Ok back to read posts.....

I did pots or shallow old cooking pans in Cali and still do it here in NC. It's easier to take care of, trim from and kind of control. I did find there is no real control of the Mint, it just rolls over the pot and keeps on going, so trimming is needed.... I placed a pot on a old terry cloth robe once and the darn stuff rooted to it as well. Plus in pots if outside on a patio gives out some amazing smells.... On the mint, there are different types of mints as well as uses besides cooking.... But then, you know that already. Plus being in Utah, you can bring them inside on those cold nights.

Yes, I want to make some tea from some of this mint. I will have to look at some of my pans. See if there are any that I can give up. Why is it that you always go for your older pans when you have newer pans in there that you can use. Is it because I want to save my new pans..they look so nice don't ya know, or, is it because I know I can get more use out of them..ha, haven't decided which it is yet. But pans, do sound like a great way to go, and I won't have to worry about looking for the older ones over the new ones. Silly, I know. Now, when you say shallow, are you talking cake/casserole pans? It seems like those would work.

You're not the only one... hang in there, it's gotta be soon, right?

I feel better now! Seems like so many live in warmer growing zones. I woke up this morning to 2" of snow. I've got so much I want to get done outside, and will have so little time to do it. I planned it all out last year, and have lots of plant/tree orders coming in that need holes dug and ground readied, not to mention animal housing. Always a hole needs digging somewhere.

We were out this evening trying to clean up our old electric grill so we can gift it to a college kid, and the wind was blowing us all over the place. It's funny now that I'm not wet and freezing to death.

Yes it is still "winterish" here too. Went for a hike yesterday and this is what it looks like in the mountains

Woke up to about an inch of snow in the back yard. DH just had to mow it yesterday. I am a firm believer in if a month has a vowel in it's name, it can snow in Utah during that month.
