I have flocks in the center of town (100K population) and keep my breeders on prairie 10 miles north of town. I suffer from predation by hawks FAR more in town than out at the farm. I have just as many raccoons, possums, and owls at home as out there, but only one coyote has been seen in this area in the last few years. Lots of foxes in town, too. I'm 6 blocks from a big university and could hit my neighbors houses with a well-aimed cotton ball, they're so close...be very careful, because the predators are probably in your suburban area, too!

We have ferrets and minks here, as well as the occasional badger...it's like a list of who's who in the PITA predators.

Absolutely not... we're the odd couple. In winter when we go to bed I'm in sweatpants, huge woolen socks (with my sweatpants tucked into them), a shirt, hoodie with hood up and gloves... and he's uhm... *cough*

The sad part is, he's still warmer than I am. He's convinced I'm part reptile.

Sounds exactly like home. I have the dual control mattress pad, too- and he lost his side's cord a couple of years ago!!

and forget the grahm cracker. Hershey bar, burnt marshmallow, hershey bar

Mmmmmmmmmm. But I'd use Madecasse chocolate. That would be sinfully good.

The Aussie in the room wanders off to Google to look up 'Smores'

We have a few Aussies on here! You keep introducing us to scrumptious treats and we'll be the Rotund-O Folks Home!!! I'm going to go look at World Market for those things...

I've decided to cut way back on my flocks. My human chicks need me more now, and I am having trouble keeping up with the farm already...and it's not even hot out yet. Hauling water and whatnot will be the end of me if I don't reduce. I'm going to sell at least 200 birds...oy.

Well, today I went down the hill to West Sacramento for the retirement party of my last (and very best) supervisor. This is the 1 year anniversary of my retirement. She's a few years younger than am I, and her original plan had been to retire in late 2014. But she's a breast cancer survivor... A month before her five year "clear" anniversary, last year, it was discovered she had more cancer... It had snuck away into metastasis in other areas of her body. So she accelerated her retirement plans. Her husband is ten years younger and won't retire for 16 years.

More than 100 people attended the party from all over the state. It was like old home week - I knew at least sixty of 'em! Most folks around my age remarked how jealous they were that I had retired and several said they'd "worried" I might have retired for the same reason as our Person of Honor today. (I have been cancer free for 10 years this coming July.)

I was very glad I was able to attend.

LInda, this will be a precious memory. Glad it was a special time for you.

Cancer is a big deal to me. It runs in my family-- grandmother /his sisters, now my mother in recent years. To stay cancer free has been my mission as of 3 years ago. WHat I mean is-- to prevent the cancer I am genetically destined for.

Linda-- you know anything about Vitamin B17?? I figure it is worth a try as it is basically eating specific foods to supply the low doses ( compared to the levels applied during treament) Just thought I would mention it, as my oncologist would neveer mention anything natural or wholistic. I have no trouble eating . . . . lol

Congrats to you, prayers for your supervisor.
I too have had to wrestle that blasted "c" a few times in my life. I'm thankful for the improved tratment protocols and outcomes. But man, it can tear a person apart, especially their family and friends.
May good health and wellness accompany us all own our life's journey.

I lock my chickens up each night! And have Lots of cover and places for the chickens to hide from hawks.

No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition....

I hate being a nay sayer with "natural cures" but caution with overdoing it with B17 as some enzymes in our digestive tract react on it to form cyanide. Anything in moderation is worth a try

Quote: Yes the general info runs from 25-100 mg /day. The too bitter apricot plants of the____ people are destroyed according to one source. I fugure if my mom and I were eating choke cherry jams in the 70's and I often ate a bitter one off the tree hoping it was ripe but instead got a bitter pucker, I can manage to eat some B17 foods. .Here is Dr.Krebs' paper as presented in 1970, clearly stating nitrilosides, in his opinion, are a vitamin, vit B17. A safe preventative of cancer. Like Vit C prevents scuvy. http://users.navi.net/~rsc/krebs3.htm According to Dr Krebs, the cyanide formation only happens at one point in the process and is not the lethal effect that everyone has been led to beleive. ( this is reading a number of sources, some better than others. I just know that I am ok eating peas, apricots, and wild blackberries. You would be surprised at the number of foods it appears in. Mung beans ( sprouted) cassava, alfalfa and many more.

A friend just wrote me today saying her boss eats one apricot pit an hour-- choosing natural treatment over radiation and chemo. WHen I looked for apricot pits, the bitter apricots are banned in the US, so I'm not clear about the type this person is eating. Apple seeds also contain B17; I used to eat all the cores, but recently I have the birds to toss it too!! LOL I'm going back to eating the core.

Moderation is the preventative levels; oncologists use a form of the B17 in high doses as treatment.

I'm not a dr-- just did a LOT of reading. Some sources better than others.
