I've only seen it one time. Watched it take a hen, with me standing there. I didn't have my gun with me that time. I have had it ever since, but of course, haven't seen it again. Last night, I fed at about 6:00p and went back to lock up at 7:00. The yote got a hen in between. I looked into some "alternative" methods, but am afraid it would cause canine colateral damage..... if you know what I mean.......

I hope you either don't see it again or see it in your sights.

Arielle, I got mine at Home Depot so your local one should have them. The nailer wasn't too expensive but with the batteries and the charger it added up pretty quick. The people at Home Depot told me to run the batteries down all the way when you first take them out of the package, charge them fully, then run them all the way down a second time so the batteries always fully charge. They do charge up pretty quick (about an hour for a full charge) and they can be used for many different Ryobi cordless tools so I am going to look into others that I might need later on. The tools themselves are not priced too bad.
ETA - if you don't need one right away, they may go on sale for Father's Day next month. Just a thought.

(X a bajillion) about losing birds to a coyote. Have you considered a live trap so you can take care of it after it is captured? You could just release any dogs or cats that get caught in the trap.

I did! Like 5 minutes more than I usually do. Then I couldn't get back to sleep. At least once I fell asleep I wasn't woken up by work last night.



I'm debating going to a hive opening today about an hour away. Still on the fence about it. They'll be discussing topics way above my skill level, but I think it would be helpful to see how they handle the bees... at least BF is at work this weekend so I don't have to worry about what he wants to do.

Wisher I am so sorry about the yote getting your chickens. Hopefully your fencing will go up quickly so you won't have to loose any more hens!

THe other thing we do about coyote, because not all the property is fenced, is urinate along the far reaches. Often the coyote will respect human urine, unless this is just a story DH feeds me.

DH usually takes a dog with him who, of course, urinates on about every tree he can squirt a drop on!! I do know the dog is the real coyote stopper. Can you get some dog pee from somewhere? Or borrow a friends dog and walk the border? Coyote don't know the size of the dog, just that it is a dog and are likely to stay out. Coyote are territorial and won't poach on anothers area.

I have only see the coyote during the day, including one grabbing a hen. We are on a deer trail and the coyote use it too. With fencing we have moved the trail out of the chicken area.

Only the fox jumped over and is not likely again as a big human mosterr chased him screaming like a banchee.

I live with three DS, a DH, and two Ddogs! I have asked each to pee on the perimeter. The youngest DS and the oldest Ddog are the only ones who seem to remember. Although, I'll give the youngun' credit, he wets enough trees to make up for at least two of the others! It is a manly mission in his mind (he's 12.)

When I saw the yote take my hen, I too, ran screaming like a banshee! I knew I wasn't going to catch it but thought if I made enough racket the yote just might drop the hen, I was wrong. I heard the poor hen's screams fade into the distance as I slowed and stopped. I am tenderhearted when it comes to animals - any animal - but that yote is on my "shot list." I just try very hard not to think about the pups she is likely feeding chicken dinner to every couple of days.......

Oh, trust me, if I had of had my gun at that moment, it would not be an issue right now. (It has occured to me that if I had shot it that day, I wouldn't be getting my fence finally put up, though......) It would have been a fairly easy shot, 30 yards, light target against a dark background, moving, but not too many trees, limbs, vines, leaves, etc. between us so tracking would have been smooth. I have no doubt I could have hit that yote with at least two shots, maybe three, before it got into the thick brush. I also know that I would not have hesitated, no matter how tenderhearted I am. I am sure, though, that I would have felt bad afterward, not regretted it, but been sad for the loss of life. That's just me.

[COLOR=800000]Well, the coyote got lowmy old, alpha roo today.  It got the young BCM roo three days ago.  That makes 9 birds lost in the past three weeks.  I can't keep them up, I don't have enough space.  I have asked my guys to build me a fenced in area (to keep the yote away) for Mother's Day.  They started on it today, maybe it will get built before I am out of chickens all together....... have you contemplated getting a great pyrenees? current and future problem solved!
