The Old Folks Home

So how do you get your turkey ready to cook Arielle? I read that you can just let the bird set for at least 24 hrs before cooking it. But so many say to make a brine either with spices and sugar or salt to soak the turkey in. I was wondering how to do that and fit it in the fridg? Maybe a cooler?
Ya'll are bringing up pin feathers do you have to get all the pin feathers out of the birds or will the burn off in the cooking process if you can't get to them all?
Pin feathers do cook away. I do not go crazy removing them.

For Brining, an Ice Chest works great!

Quote: Definitely pull ALL the pin feathers. My chickens are hairy, and a burning candle is helpful there. Pliers for the tough pin feathers; knife for the hardest.

I don't brine, or flavor in any way. I figure what was the point of all that good food in an effort to make yummy meat. I butcher and put right into the roasting pan like a THanksgiving dinner. SLLLLLOOOOOOOW roasted. 250 degrees seems to work for me. Takes a good number of hours. One of my best was an over night bird. Ready for breakfast.

Not saying you can't brine or flavor. I just don't have the time for that, and I'm certainly not adding sugar to the brine. Perhaps a very old bird is worth brining though. All mine are a year or less.

PS My son loves your avatar-- he mimics it until I go into gales o f laughter.

haahaa-- I see ROn had a diferent opin on pin feathers. Do what ever works for you. I like to eat the skin, and I don't like to hit a large peice from a broken primary.

I get the feather out--but there is often a bit of black left under the skin.

True, I do not eat the skin but like it to be there for the flavor it gives the meat.

I was right!!! Took DS for physical yesterday and asked for Lymes testing. DOc was great but said usually the testing is inconclusive with out symptoms. I didn't have any specifics just a mothers intuition, something has been brewing for a long time. He's "off". Doc called today with results-- POSITIVE. Starts meds tonight!! Now do I dare suggest my other son should be tested too . . .

I would get the other DS tested also, just because brothers usually hang together and do the same things and probably have the same things?

Your Story reminds me of when I took my Youngest to see if she had Strep Throat. All the posters said less than 20% of sore throats were strep. I insisted on the test because my DW has Rheumatic Fever often.

Of course it was strep throat!
