The Old Folks Home

I came to the realization the other day that I really AM a crazy chicken lady. Always thought I was just eccentric and happened to have a lot of chickens and other poultry, but something I said/wrote over on Oz's Diary ("of a crazy chicken man getting the flock out of here") really demonstrated it.

It was right there in front of me. And I wrote it, so there was nobody else to blame. :gig

I am not embarrassed by being eccentric..... But I have been wincing with this new realization. At least I know through all my work experience answering 9-1-1 calls that "crazy" does NOT equal "stupid."

Hang on - Sparkle the House Silkie wants me to give her chicks some treats. She's been teaching them to jump up to take raisins from my fingers. Too cute to resist.

I will take crazy over stupid anytime

Cynthia you have to tell me where I can buy on of these! It would so go with my other barn sign!

I think I need one of those signs, too, but a little more personalized. Instead of a svelte female silhouette, I need mine to sport the silhouette of someone in a straight jacket surrounded by a slew of chicken silhouettes. Wild hair every which way.

Violaters will be pecked severely. (Or flogged by the rooster? Which sounds like the worse punishment?)

As the Philippines is one of the few countries where that unspeakable "sport" is permitted, you are more likely to find a house with three or four roos than three or four hens.

Except for some of the gated communities in the big cities, not hearing the sounds of roosters is abnormal.

You get used to most sounds around you with a little tolerance. I even learned to get used to the predawn call to prayer by the mosques in Indonesia when I was hanging out there.
Oh the Sport goes on around here, so lots of Games and the ferals are mostly Games or Game mixes. I'm hoping to have a spot ready and I'll be bringing tsome of those ferals home this weekend. I'm going to worm and di[ them and all the roos are going to the auction on Monday. In a way I wonder though if those roos, aren't helping me to not have trouble with neighbors. There are plenty of people who own them around here, but I had mixed chicks thanks to those %$# # birds and they somehow knocked over buckets of feed and wasted it. I can barely open those buckets with 2 hands and they got them open.

My mom taught me to never trust anyone who seemed sane. They're weird. Crazy has always worked in my family.

That's so cool that Sparkle is teaching the babies. My broodies have to be held off with a shield and sword if I try to get near their babies. LOL
Well my roo has settled in and I was looking at how he carries himself and I'm sure he is a mix of some sort. I don't know what kind of hens to get him. I looked at alot of bantams last night but couldn't find anything that quite looks like a match. His tail is to high for one breed, body to low for another, to small for the rest. He is 10-12 inch tall, about 2lbs, with VERY short legs, and has a smudged white earlobe. I tips on what to pair him with?

He does look a lot like a Serama, but he also looks somewhat like my Japs. I love those little guys. I have a BTB roo, Lowrider, who thinks he's a Marans and we love watching him out in the yard. You rarely see his feet, he's so low to the ground with those tiny legs, but boy can he move! I have OEGBs too. I have a self blue out there and she's beautiful, so I say go with that. Should look kind of cool. You're guy doesn't look very OEGB to me though, but I guess he could have some. Definately has Jap in him.
Cool pool! That would be a great temporary pool, but if you had to purchase the bales and the tarp it would cost a bit. You might come out cheaper by getting the above ground pools with the filters and use it year after year. I used to have an above ground pool and we built a deck around it. I enjoyed it, but it was a lot of work. We have so many trees on our property and there were always leaves and debris in the pool that I had to clean out. I did a lot more cleaning than I did relaxing! I'd love to build a small in ground pool with a screened house over it so that it would be easier to keep clean. Maybe one of these days!
Well I jumped the gun yesterday. Ordered a small above ground, 12' x 30" (little grandkids), got my confirmation # and piled Makayla and her friend into the car and headed for Walmart. We get inside and they saw water noodles, so we grabbed 2 of those and headed for the pickup area. No lines, lady on the phone and I was so happy that I'd be helped fast. She hangs up and takes my order number and looks at me. Then asks if I got the confirmation email.....ummmmmm I was in a hurry, so didn't even think about it. They were out of stock, so she gave me a number to cal, which I lost and have looked everywhere. It probably fell out of my pocket in the store, since on the way out the girls faces were dragging until they saw the big cage of big bouncy balls. Of course the ones they wanted were deep in the middle or towards the back. Being tall doesn't help you get out of reaching for that ball way to the back. Then they tested each one for bounce. Makayla's wasn't as big, but there's a ball pump here, so last night we tried making it tighter and able to bounce better and it ain't happenen. So then I had to explain to her that you don't go ask for something back when you buy it for someone else. She was ready to confiscate her friend's ball. So now we're waiting for an email that says it's in. Anywhere from 3 to 6 days...aggggg I told Makayla she could pick a a better bouncing ball when we go to pick it up.

I don't have to worry much about leaves. Dirt and feathers?? Yeah, those are my concern. I've looked for a ladder for that pool and I swear they cost 2 times more than the pool itself. Covers I can't do till next month either, but the 99 cent store had tarps last month and I bought the 15 they had left, so maybe I can rig something up. I also need a shade. Looks like I'll be buying even more PVC. I think I love that stuff as much as I do duct tape! My whole backyard is sunny and no shade, so I want to make sure I don't have a bunch of kids burnt to a crisp, so I'm trying to figure out a decent, not to tacky shade using the PVC and tarps for now.
