The Old Folks Home

No picture of the  bench the ^$^%#&%&* seller removed??     Too many trees for Emu's tho, they'd break their neck running around.

Yup, two pictures of that bench.

I will try to make this as short as possible while giving all the details: About 4 wks ago I purchased 2 24 wk old Barred Rocks and 2 6wk old Welsummers. I don't have any good ways to keep chickens separate, so I put the Barred Rocks in an extra large dog house and removed 1 entire side of it and pushed it against my other chickens' run. Since the 'dog house' has no run attached to it, I felt bad for having them cooped up all day and night, so after a week I threw them in with the 'big girls' and rooster. Everyone got along great and no problems. During this time I had the 2 babies separated in a dog crate on the other side of the big girls run. Well, when I let the Barred Rocks out of their dog house, I moved the babies into there for more space. They are now 10 wks old and have been living next door to the others for 4 wks. I felt they needed some fresh air, so yesterday I let them out for a while. All seemed well for the most part. I did notice my rooster chasing them and pecking at them, but all the girls just left them alone. I chased Rex off from them several times and he seemed to go on and mind his business. Well, the kids came home from school and I got distracted and busy. By the time I realized that I should put the babies back in their dog house, it was too late. Rex (I'm fairly sure it was him) had pecked out all the feathers on the head of one of the babies and entirely scalped it as in there is no more skin on the whole head. It was a bloody mess and traumatized. I coated it in Neosporin (that is all I had) and put it in the dog crate, sister in the dog house, and the rest back in their run. I don't know if she will make it or not. Why did he attack her like that and to that extent? Is that normal rooster behavior? What should I do now?

Red - Just keep her separate and keep the antibiotic salve on the wound. Make sure there is no "-caine" in it as that is toxic to chickens. Also, make sure flies don't get to the wound. You may want to give her some extra protein and monitor her water intake to make sure she is drinking enough. Roosters are like that sometimes. He may not recognize the baby as a pullet or future hen. Keep them separate until she gets older and is healed.

Linda - That's an easy replacement, Lowe's, $49.98.

Yes, sadly it is. Sometimes you can put 10 week old chicks in with older chickens but often it is not a good idea. The rule it that the new chickens need to be 3/4 the size of the new ones. Introduce them through the fence for a week or two and put them together at dusk or after dark. I only combine them during the weekend now so that I can watch them closely for the first day and get them out of the pen If they are getting beaten up.

Make sure the neosporin does not have pain killer in it. That is bad for chickens. Vetrycin or Vetrycin Gel works great for healing wounds.

Try integrating them again when the babies are 16 weeks old.

Poor Duck-Duck. She is in love and miserable. Her love is in the chicken coop and she can't bear to be away from him. He is a rooster, and he will give her the attention she wants (he's tried to breed her several times) but it never seems to satisfy either of them. If I let her out of her pen, she runs, quacking loudly, to the coop to find her love. If he ignores her, she will dance for him, gracefully dipping her head to the left two times, then to the right two times. Then she runs her head and neck straight out in front and squats in a sweet little duck curtsey. She will do this over and over until he tries again. It's sad, really.........

Thank you, I will try it again....much later. Hopefully she survives. She is not eating or drinking at all right now. What should I try to give her to entice her to try to eat?

Meal worms, scrambled or boiled eggs, tuna or catfood, yogurt, anything that she will eat....

Ode to Duck-Duck

A mighty pain to love it is,
And 'tis a pain that pain to miss;
But of all pains, the greatest pain
It is to love, but love in vain.

Yes, and get some Poly Vi Sol Baby drop vitamins Without Iron and give her a drop on the beak twice a day. Dip her beak into the water. She is in shock so you have to get her out of it--It usually takes a day and they start eating again.
